The FBI stated it opened an investigation into a security threat directed at Houston Stadium during Brazil’s 2-1 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 win against Japan.<\/p>\n

Monday saw the World Cup knockout rounds press on following Canada’s elimination of South Africa the previous day. However, the Brazil vs. Japan game in Houston raised serious security concerns, with FBI Houston confirming they were looking into reports of a threat targeting Houston Stadium, home to the NFL’s Texans.<\/p>\n

The bureau stated there was currently no credibility to the threat circulating online, but that they were continuing to monitor the situation. The official statement from FBI Houston read, via The Mirror US<\/a>: “FBI Houston is aware of a threat to Houston stadium circulating online. We are working with our local, state, and federal public safety partners to investigate who is behind the communication.<\/p>\n

“At this time, there is no credibility to the threat. We continue to analyze and assess the situation. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or individuals to law enforcement immediately.”<\/p>\n

The statement came as Houston staged its sixth of seven scheduled World Cup games, with Brazil squaring off against Japan in the Round of 32. The exact timing of the threat remains unclear, though authorities were alerted to it on Monday morning. The Brazil vs. Japan game kicked off at 12pm local time.<\/p>\n

FBI Houston spokesperson Connor Hagan disclosed the bureau had been alerted to an online threat distributed to numerous businesses and media outlets. The message mentioned Houston Stadium, and Hagan stated investigators have concluded the threat lacks credibility but are still working to trace its origin.<\/p>\n

He noted the FBI is taking steps to address the situation while examining the source of the communication. Hagan indicated no further details are being shared at this stage.<\/p>\n

The FBI will keep monitoring and evaluating the situation as the investigation continues. Authorities also urged the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious behavior or persons to law enforcement.<\/p>\n

The highly anticipated game between Brazil and Japan apparently attracted a near-sellout audience of approximately 69,000 spectators in Houston.<\/p>\n

The FBI remains on heightened awareness nationwide throughout this summer’s World Cup. In Philadelphia, the agency established “No Drone Zones” above Lincoln Financial Field, with substantial penalties reaching $100,000 for anyone who violates the restricted airspace.<\/p>\n

In December, FEMA announced a $250 million grant to be distributed among the 11 states set to host the World Cup, which coincides with the United States’ 250th anniversary.
