The volunteers are members of the local Venezuelan community, coming together to help survivors in their homeland in the face of tragedy.

“I was born in Venezuela, but I came here 20 years ago. I love my home country and this country as well,” said Monica Villalobos, a volunteer.

The organization is on a growing list of collection sites around the Houston metro and other Texas cities such as Dallas, joining a worldwide humanitarian effort for thousands in need.

Diana Mendt, the founder, says she launched the nonprofit in 2006 to support Venezuelan immigrants.

“I was born in Venezuela.
