{"id":357162,"date":"2026-07-01T12:01:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T12:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/357162\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T12:01:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T12:01:23","slug":"how-eggs-became-the-latest-campaign-issue-in-texas-senate-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/357162\/","title":{"rendered":"How eggs became the latest campaign issue in Texas&#8217; Senate race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN \u2013 With the Democrat campaigning in the produce aisle and the Republican promising voters millions of free eggs, Texas\u2019 Senate race has turned into a political food fight.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican candidate, announced an antitrust settlement Tuesday that will send <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/news\/releases\/attorney-general-ken-paxton-secures-over-7-million-free-eggs-texans-part-antitrust-settlement\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">7 million free eggs<\/a> to Texas food banks. That comes as his Democratic opponent, James Talarico, released an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mguky_mSV80\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ad in a grocery store<\/a> last week promising to lower food costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis settlement serves as another reform that we have secured to prevent price gouging and unlawful conduct that hurts Americans and their wallets,\u201d\u00a0Paxton said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico, however, quickly pushed back, saying that Paxton has done little to help Texans struggling with high grocery bills, while roasting Paxton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasdemocrats.org\/media\/paxton-under-fire-for-abandoning-texas-ahead-of-americas-250th-for-luxury-european-vacation-with-his-mistress\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent reported vacation<\/a> to Iceland and referencing his own grocery store ad, \u201cDrowning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKen Paxton is scrambling to distract from the fact that Texans are drowning under the high price of gas, groceries, and healthcare \u2013 all while he jets off on a lavish European vacation,\u201d said JT Ennis, a Talarico spokesman. \u201cHe is the embodiment of the broken, corrupt political system we\u2019re running against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paxton has consistently denied wrongdoing, calling corruption allegations politically motivated, and he has touted his efforts as AG in holding corporations accountable for raising prices.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas settlement ends antitrust claims brought by attorneys general in 17 states, stemming from allegations that three companies conspired to illegally raise egg prices from 2022 to 2025.<\/p>\n<p>They now are required to donate 53 million eggs to food banks and other community aid groups in those states, including 7 million eggs for Texas, and pay $3.3 million to those states.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign&#8217;s culinary dispute didn&#8217;t begin with eggs.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans seized on the order as evidence he didn&#8217;t eat meat, even though he has said repeatedly he isn&#8217;t vegan and has been photographed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/james-talarico-s-latest-response-gop-attacks-22286761.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eating barbecue<\/a> on the trail.<\/p>\n<p>With grocery costs still among voters&#8217; top concerns, neither campaign appears ready to change the menu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"AUSTIN \u2013 With the Democrat campaigning in the produce aisle and the Republican promising voters millions of free&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":357163,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[27,29,28],"class_list":["post-357162","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-texas","tag-texas","tag-texas-headlines","tag-texas-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/357162","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=357162"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/357162\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/357163"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=357162"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=357162"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=357162"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
