EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/ CBS4) \u2014 Drivers in Far East El Paso frustrated by years of construction at Pellicano Drive and Loop 375 may finally see the roadway reopen by the end of September, according to El Paso County officials.<\/p>\n
One viewer summed up a common complaint about the long-running Pellicano widening project, writing: \u201cPellicano and Loop 375. No one is working on it, it\u2019s just been sitting there for years!\u201d<\/p>\n
The project has been under construction for years. El Paso County said the biggest setback came when the original contractor filed for bankruptcy, bringing work to a standstill for nearly two years. After a lengthy court process, a new contractor took over last year.<\/p>\n
County Commissioner Iliana Holguin said the county also had to secure additional funding through tax dollars while the court battle played out.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the county had to allocate an extra and additional $6 million, which we of course plan to try to recover from the insurance company through the bankruptcy because that’s still going on,\u201d Holguin said.<\/p>\n
County officials said their main priority is opening the roadway, which they expect to happen by Sept. 30.<\/p>\n
Officials said opening the roadway is only the first phase. A second phase is expected to add lighting, landscaping, medians and other improvements. That portion remains in the design stage, with plans expected to be finished by the end of the year before officials can determine the final cost.<\/p>\n
