Despite calls from the San Antonio mayor and Jewish community members to scrap a controversial concert for rapper Ye – long known by his birth name, Kanye West – the Alamodome show will go on as planned Saturday night.

The hip hop artist has been embroiled in controversy in recent years, largely because of antisemitic lyrics, outbursts and comments. Earlier this year, he apologized and said his statements and behavior were tied to untreated bipolar disorder.

The July Fourth show marks the first time in over a decade that Ye has taken the stage in San Antonio.

He was slated to perform at the AT&T Center, now the Frost Bank Center, in December 2016, but canceled that show and his remaining tour dates after he was hospitalized for what first responders said was a “psychiatric emergency.” Prior to that, he last performed in San Antonio in 2013.

While Ye’s concert may be the most notable and most attended local event on July 4, city-run holiday events at Market Square, La Villita and Hemisfair’s Civic Park will also draw many residents downtown.

“Before heading downtown, attendees are encouraged to check event details, road closures, and parking information,” said city spokesperson Kelly Saunders.

Looking to go?

Tickets are still available for Ye’s Saturday show, ranging from around $225 to more than $850, according to Ticketmaster. The Alamodome seats more than 60,000 people. The show is slated to begin at 9 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m.

Parking at the Alamodome is on a first-come, first-served basis and costs $60. The city-owned venue operates three lots on the east, southeast and south sides of the venue. It does not accept cash.

Other nearby parking options can be booked in advance through ParkWhiz.

East Side residents and businesses in the Historic Gardens neighborhood – the residential area closest to the Alamodome – often offer informal street parking for major events.

VIA is also offering direct service to the Alamodome from park-and-ride locations at its Stone Oak station, the Crossroads Mall on the Northwest Side, the Brooks City Base Walmart near Southeast Military and the Frost Bank Center on the Eastside. Service begins at 5 p.m. and costs $1.30 each way.

The Alamodome’s clear bag policy will be enforced, meaning any bag – with the exception of diaper and medically necessary ones – larger than 5 by 8 inches must be transparent. Staff will check all bags.

What songs will Ye play?

Last month, Ye played a show in Tampa, Florida, which also drew pushback from area politicians. The rapper took the stage an hour after the show was slated to begin and had no opening act, according to a review from the Tampa Bay Times. Ye did not make any antisemitic or pro-Nazi remarks during the two-hour show, the newspaper reported.

The set list for the show encompassed many of the hits from his more than two-decade discography and totaled 34 songs, according to the newspaper. Ye released his first album, “The College Dropout,” in 2004 and has since released 13 more.

His latest, “Bully,” includes about 20 tracks, including one with Texas rapper Travis Scott – a former University of Texas at San Antonio student – and another with Latino star Peso Pluma, who also spent part of his childhood in Bexar County.

The concert promoter confirmed to the city that Ye will not perform his controversial “Heil Hitler” single at Saturday’s Alamodome show.

Political pushback

Last month, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones pushed for a council vote to cancel the concert, saying the Alamodome is a public, taxpayer-subsidized venue and Ye’s antisemitism does not reflect the values of San Antonio residents.

The majority of the 10-member council was opposed to such a move. Council members condemned the rapper’s past comments but raised concerns about censorship if the show were canceled.

While local leaders’ push to stop Saturday’s performance fell short, other places have succeeded in stopping Ye’s shows. Earlier this year, French officials blocked the rapper from taking the stage in the southern city of Marseille. Prior to that, the United Kingdom blocked him from performing in London, and Australia yanked his visa.

Still, Ye is set to go international following his show in San Antonio, taking the stage in Albania, Spain and Portugal before returning to the States for a pair of hometown performances at Chicago’s Soldier Field.
