SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers walked through Phil Hardberger Park Friday on the North Side and it prompted questions from community members.<\/p>\n
Many visitors described the park as a place where they come to exercise, spend time with family and relax.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s kind of scary because usually there\u2019s kids out here too,\u201d resident Alonso Martinez said in reaction to the photos.<\/p>\n
Trail runner Ella McArdle called the images unsettling. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think it is disgusting,\u201d McArdle said. \u201cI\u2019m Hispanic myself. I\u2019ve seen it impact the Hispanic community so much in San Antonio. I see it all over everywhere. In the park, it\u2019s crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marquetta Valdez owns a run club that uses Hardberger Park every week to meet. Valdez said she worries the presence of immigration officers could discourage people from joining the group.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m afraid that if I tell them, \u2018Hey, ICE is in the area,\u2019 that they\u2019re not going to want to come anymore,\u201d Valdez said.<\/p>\n
KSAT asked ICE if it was common for officers to patrol public parks. <\/p>\n
ICE said its officers use \u201creasonable suspicion\u201d and routinely conduct law enforcement operations to protect the American public, but did not say whether any arrests were made at the park.<\/p>\n
\u201cICE has authority for lawful arrests under 8 USC 1357,\u201d an ICE spokesperson said. \u201cLaw enforcement officers use \u2018reasonable suspicion\u2019 to investigate immigration status and probable cause to make arrests consistent with the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, ICE denied using \u201cracial profiling\u201d to detain people in a statement to KSAT.<\/p>\n
Still, parkgoers said immigration officers walking along Phil Hardberger park trails is disturbing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI truly think it\u2019s devastating,\u201d McArdle said. \u201cI hate to see it here. I really do.\u201d<\/p>\n
