Holiday celebrations are bringing crowds of locals and visitors to downtown Corpus Christi, where businesses, organizers and police are preparing for a busy weekend.<\/p>\n

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Downtown Corpus Christi is preparing for one of its busiest weekends of the year as locals and visitors gather for Fourth of July festivities, with community leaders expecting large crowds throughout the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

Events including First Friday ArtWalk and the Mayor’s Big Bang fireworks celebration are drawing people to the downtown area, where restaurants were already filled Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Arlene Medrano, Executive Director of the Downtown Corpus Christi Management District, said the holiday weekend is one of the biggest of the year for downtown businesses.<\/p>\n

“Fourth of July is huge for downtown and Corpus Christi in general. So, we see hundreds of thousands of visitors to downtown,” Medrano said.<\/p>\n

With multiple events taking place throughout the weekend, Medrano said there is something for everyone.<\/p>\n

“First Friday ArtWalk, for the Fourth of July fireworks show,” Medrano said. “Rockets, Concrete Street, Executive Surf Club, The Exchange, they all have live music, or some sort of activity happening tonight.”<\/p>\n

She said the momentum reflects years of growth and investment in downtown Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n

“We’re so excited for the progress that we’ve seen in downtown these last 10 years, so grateful for the business owners and all of the entrepreneurs who took that chance on downtown,” Medrano said.<\/p>\n

Longtime downtown establishments such as Water Street Oyster Bar and Executive Surf Club are also preparing for the influx of visitors.<\/p>\n

Alex Davied, Marketing Director for Water Street Restaurants, said business has steadily increased in recent weeks and is expected to peak over the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

“We are thrilled to see all of the guests this weekend. I would say traffic has picked up the past couple of weeks, but especially this weekend with the 4th of July. We’re seeing tons of tourists, but also locals bringing their family who’s in town,” Davied said.<\/p>\n

Davied said the economic impact extends beyond the restaurants themselves.<\/p>\n

“It helps support not only our families but all of our servers’ families, and it just goes so much beyond these four walls,” Davied said.<\/p>\n

As thousands of people head downtown, the Corpus Christi Police Department is increasing patrols to help ensure a safe holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

“We will have extra officer presence downtown. There will be some that will be doing like traffic control, so any street closures, you could see officers down there,” Officer Madeline Commons with the department’s Public Information Office said.<\/p>\n

Police are also reminding people to make plans for a safe ride home if they choose to drink.<\/p>\n

“If you’re gonna be downtown, or anywhere, if you’re drinking, we just don’t want you to be driving, so just have a plan before you start celebrating the holiday,” Commons said.<\/p>\n

Medrano said downtown businesses are looking forward to celebrating with the community as the nation marks America’s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n

“People have started the 250th anniversary of America. And so yeah, we’re excited to celebrate alongside the public,” Medrano said.<\/p>\n

Visitors heading downtown should expect heavy foot traffic throughout the weekend. Beginning at 7 a.m., Shoreline Boulevard will be closed from Interstate 37 to Cooper’s Alley, and parking will not be allowed on side streets. CCPD said towing will be enforced.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Free parking is available at City Hall and the Nueces County Courthouse, where attendees can board complimentary CCRTA shuttles to Water Street.<\/p>\n
