AUSTIN (KXAN) \u2013 Texas families enrolled in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program can now access upgraded electronic benefits cards designed to make it easier to manage and protect their benefits, state officials announced.<\/p>\n
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission said the new WIC electronic benefits transfer cards launched July 1 and are integrated with the upgraded myWIC mobile app.<\/p>\n
The updated system allows clients to track their benefits and purchases in real time. Benefits can also be added remotely, eliminating the need for some in-person updates. For added security, users can freeze and unfreeze their benefits through the app.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want Texas families to feel supported every time they use WIC,\u201d Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth said in a statement. \u201cThese upgrades make it easier for families to see their benefits, plan their shopping and feel confident they are getting the nutritious foods they need.\u201d<\/p>\n
The new cards were distributed during scheduled appointments and became active July 1. Clients must create a PIN for their new cards either through the myWIC app or by calling the Texas WIC Card Management Line.<\/p>\n
Women can apply for WIC as soon as they become pregnant, and families with children younger than 5 years old may qualify. Eligible applicants include mothers, fathers, grandparents, foster parents and legal guardians.<\/p>\n
According to HHSC, the Texas WIC program serves more than 760,000 women, infants and children each month.<\/p>\n
