Fraud Prevention and Accountability Act<\/a>, would target what he described as billions of dollars in misdirected government payments. The bill would establish an Office of the Inspector General for Fraud, Accountability, and Recovery within the U.S. Treasury. <\/p>\n\u201cTaxpayers need to have confidence that the money that the American people receive is done properly,\u201d Sessions said. \u201cThey need to be assured that the federal government has a vested interest in making sure that the right money was given for the right reason.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sessions said the Biden administration created a program called the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee to identify misdirected payments made during the pandemic by compiling roughly 1.8 billion pieces of data.<\/p>\n
The bill passed the House of representatives on a largely partisan basis last month.<\/p>\n
Sessions chairs the Subcommittee on Government Operations and worked alongside Democrats on the committee over the past year and a half. He said the subcommittee held six hearings to determine the best approach before settling on the legislation.<\/p>\n
