Matthew Jackson claimed ownership of at least a dozen Harris County properties through a series of legal filings, according to a Houston Chronicle<\/a> review of property records.<\/p>\n The properties ranged from a $130,000 home to an apartment complex valued at $17 million. The Chronicle reported that some of the properties were tied to homicide victims or had recently become vacant.<\/p>\n For homeowners, heirs, landlords, and estate administrators, the case underscores a serious gap in property protection. A house can become a target while probate, repairs, listing decisions, eviction issues, or family disputes are still unresolved.<\/p>\n Locks Were Changed at One Heights Home<\/p>\n One case involved a century-old home on Allston Street in the Heights. Christopher Bauer, whose daughter Christa Gilley previously owned the home with Lee Gilley, told the Chronicle he returned in June and found signs posted inside the windows and doors.<\/p>\n The signs announced new ownership and warned people to stay away. The locks had also been changed, according to the report.<\/p>\n The Filings Cited Adverse Possession<\/p>\n The Chronicle reported that Jackson filed documents he described as affidavits of adverse possession with the Harris County Clerk\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n Texas law<\/a> defines adverse possession as an actual and visible appropriation of real property that is continued under a claim of right inconsistent with another person\u2019s claim. A separate 10-year provision<\/a> applies to real property held in peaceable and adverse possession by someone who cultivates, uses, or enjoys it.<\/p>\n Officials Say the Pattern Is Under Review<\/p>\n Harris County officials do not recognize Jackson as the lawful owner of at least one disputed Glen Valley Drive home, according to the Chronicle.<\/p>\n The Harris County Attorney\u2019s Office is investigating reports of fraud for possible civil claims. County Attorney Abbie Kamin told the Chronicle that the issue can involve sophisticated schemes aimed at unsuspecting homeowners.<\/p>\n Vacant Homes Need Active Oversight<\/p>\n A quiet property can still change on paper, online, or at the front door.
