WASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corp said on Monday it will build a new $3.6 \u200cbillion auto plant in Texas and shift some \u200ctruck production to the United States from Mexico. <\/p>\n
The Japanese automaker said the \u200bnew 2.5-million-square-foot building will be located on its San Antonio manufacturing campus and will open by 2030, creating 2,000 jobs. The car company said it will move production of \u200cits mid-size Tacoma \u2060pickup truck from the Toyota Manufacturing Baja California plant in Mexico to the Texas plant \u2060when completed. <\/p>\n
Toyota will continue to build Tacoma trucks at its Guanajuato plant in Mexico. Toyota already produces Tundra trucks and \u200bSUVs at \u200bits existing San Antonio \u200bassembly plant on the site \u200cwhere the new plant will be built and a new 500,000-square-foot rear axle plant is set to open in the autumn. <\/p>\n
President Donald Trump has pressured automakers to move more auto production to the United States and has \u200chiked tariffs on autos, steel, aluminum \u200band parts. <\/p>\n
Toyota said it remains committed \u200bto its operations \u200bthroughout Mexico, Canada and the United States and \u200curged Trump to extend a \u200bNorth American \u200bfree trade deal that automakers say is critical to integrated auto production. <\/p>\n
In 2020, Toyota moved Tacoma production from \u200bSan Antonio to \u200cthe Guanajuato plant, alongside the Baja plant that \u200bhad produced the truck since 2004. <\/p>\n
