You have to find a new doctor, memorize the layout of a new grocery store, figure out street names, and, perhaps most dauntingly, make new friends.

As a recent, but enthusiastic, transplant to the Lone Star State, I have started gathering my favorite haunts in Austin. I’ve been dedicating special attention to spots that seem to be watering holes for cool cats.

Starting that first conversation is often the toughest step. You might feel a little awkward at times, but, fortunately, Austin has a reputation for embracing the weird.

This is just one transplant’s list of places that have reliably facilitated fun conversations with strangers.

Flightpath

If you work from home and find yourself in need of getting out of your actual apartment, Flightpath is one of the best options for locking in. It’s the perfect spot to grab a sipping coffee and share a table with someone new.

I’ve found myself working across from artists and UT Austin graduate students alike at Flightpath. As an added benefit, if you’re like me and find yourself wilting under fluorescent bulbs, Flightpath seems to have mastered the art of lighting — almost every table is lit with a soft, warm glow.

5011 Duval St.

Deborah Cannon

/

KUT News

First Light Books opened in 2023 and features an in-store cafe with espresso, wine and beer offerings.

First Light Books, Allday Pizza & Tiny Grocer

I’ve spent an entire Sunday meeting new people at these three spots in Hyde Park. First Light Books is always packed with people willing to have a lengthy conversation about their current esoteric read. Come to wander the bookstore, stay to share a coffee with folks working to socialize their puppies or working through The Artist’s Way.

Besides offering a fantastic slice with epic crust, Allday Pizza offers a great environment to solicit insights from people who eat interesting things. In line for Allday, I got the scoop on the best pizza to order (the pickle slice) and a whole list of other great bites to try in Austin. The after work, post 5 p.m. line is often long, and that can be one of the best opportunities to strike up a spontaneous yap.

And never miss an opportunity to ask for a sandwich recommendation from the deli counter at Tiny Grocer.

4300 Speedway

Pease Park and Zilker Park

I have been able to hop into games of pickup frisbee, soccer, basketball and volleyball at Pease Park and Zilker. There seems to always be people out in both parks open to a straggler joining in — even if, like me, you’re not very good!

Walking the trail in Pease Park has also led to several heartwarming interactions with strangers over wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for barn owls and horned lizards.

Pease Park: 1100 Kingsbury St.

Zilker Park: 2100 Barton Springs Road

Farmer Mary Lightsey, right, hands over a bag of produce to a customer at the Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller in 2025.

Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller

Spending a Sunday morning wandering a farmers market is a surefire way to meet people who are into fresh produce and fresher conversations. The Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller hosts so many cool vendors who are always eager to talk over a sample (or two, or five), and it’s surprisingly easy to strike up conversations while waiting in line or browsing a stand.

The market has a community feel that makes you want to linger. If you’re anything like me, it might be prudent to set a budget for yourself ahead of arriving.

2006 Philomena St.

Russell Crawford

/

KUT News

Visitors can climb and rent gear for free during their first visit to Mesa Rim.

Climbing gyms

I was warned by friends who graduated a few years ahead of me that sometime in your mid-life an inexplicable urge to start rock climbing will happen to you. I am not the only Austin transplant who has been struck by the desire to scale walls for fun, which is great news because that makes climbing gyms an excellent spot to meet friends.

Unlike traditional gyms, which can foster a more solitary, “don’t talk to me while I’m chiseling my temple” vibe, climbing gyms often encourage chitchat. Strangers share tips for how to climb and volunteer to belay one another. If you’re not ready to pay for a membership, Mesa Rim comps your first climb. Find out more about the climbing scene in Austin.

Mesa Rim: 1205 Sheldon Cove, Building 3

Crux Central: 6015 Dillard Circle #B

Crux South: 220 Ralph Ablanedo Drive, Unit 100

Practice Yoga Austin

There are tons of yoga studios in Austin, but Practice Yoga Austin fosters a uniquely welcoming atmosphere. The donation based studio offers multiple classes every day. Each time I’ve gone I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the diversity of skills present in the room. Seasoned yogis breathe through Vinyasa flows with first timers while the instructors provide patient guidance.

The studio has mats and other yoga equipment for participants to use for free, just be sure to clean them after. Cleaning and restoring the room for the next yoga practice is a great time to share in the fruits of your practice with a stranger! Grab a tea before class in the lobby and enjoy local Austin watercooler chatter.

1103 E. 6th St.

Lorianne Willett

/

KUT News

People sit at tables under misters at a trivia event at Radio East.

Radio Coffee & Beer trivia nights

Every Wednesday some of the most exceptionally talented trivia nerds I have ever witnessed descend upon Radio Coffee & Beer off of Menchaca Road. The questions: hard. The drinks: delightful. The company: unparalleled. The host: another Austin “Lee.”

I’ve gone a few times and the courtyard has always been packed.

The outdoor ambience and subtle aerosolized tension of competition make trivia at Radio a real treat. I would never be one to aggressively chirp other trivia teams at a friendly neighborhood coffeehouse, but, if you were that type of person, this is the exact right environment for that. There are few friendships stronger than those forged in the race for second to last place.

4204 Menchaca Road

Moontower Saloon

In South Austin, Moontower Saloon is the definition of a third-space hangout. Sand volleyball courts, live music, yard games, food trucks, and plenty of TVs showing whatever game is on transform the sprawling venue into an easy place to spend an entire afternoon or evening.

Whether you come for giant Jenga or to listen to Austin bands shred some slide guitar, it’s easy to let time slip away at Moontower. And if you’ve got a ranching background, or just fancy yourself a cowboy, grab a rope, head over to the practice steer and show everyone how to lasso some plastic cattle.

10212 Menchaca Road

<img decoding="async" class="Image" alt="People line up on a city street outside a club. Show up for the openers, dance with gusto, and revel in high quality, live music.

Shows at the Moody Center or other large venues are exciting, but Antone’s shines for the connection you can make with the music and artists. When I’ve been there for smaller shows, whole bands have come out after their sets to talk about music, dancing, and, in my experience, why ugly shoes are suddenly so cool.

305 E. 5th St.

The Elephant Room

If you like jazz, I’ve been told there’s few better listening spots in Austin than the Elephant Room. This underground jazz club stacks people into quiet listening seats at the front of the room and attentive but chatty seats in the back. I would recommend heading to the back of the room, grabbing a seat or a spot at the bar and letting the musical conversation whisk you away.

I’m a huge proponent of bringing a deck of cards, well, virtually anywhere, but especially to a bar. The Elephant Room is a good spot to play a round or two of a card game in between sets. Two-person games regularly stretch to four or five people at places like here, where the music, and perhaps, truthfully, the drinks, make folks excited about games like gin rummy and palace.

315 Congress Ave.

Moving to a new city is hard.
