LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The City of Lubbock has broken ground on a bond project to widen and rebuild Upland Ave. on the west side of the city.<\/p>\n
The project will expand Upland Avenue from a two-lane, undivided road to a five-lane roadway between 34th and 50th St. City leaders said the work is designed to address street flooding, narrow lanes, and pedestrian safety concerns.<\/p>\n
What the project includes<\/p>\n
Dr. Jennifer Wilson, who represents Lubbock City Council District 5, said the improvements will include new drainage infrastructure, sidewalks, and safety upgrades.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo you can expect to see brand new drainage out here to make sure that we don\u2019t have water pooling on the road, new infrastructure in with sidewalks for people to be able to walk and just safety aspects,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n
The project also includes traffic signal updates and work near a railroad crossing. Wilson said the road is expected to become a main corridor for the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will be a main thoroughfare, so you\u2019ll see businesses lining both sides of the road and then residential areas surrounding that. So a new important way for Lubbock to grow,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n
Mayor cites west side growth<\/p>\n
Mayor Mark McBrayer said the project is a response to ongoing development in west Lubbock.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this area, a lot of new development out in this part of west Lubbock. So we need the roadway to be able to contain all the traffic that we\u2019re going to have out here,\u201d McBrayer said.<\/p>\n
McBrayer said the finished road will include curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and a park strip alongside it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will be a beautiful street when we\u2019re through with it. Not just a plain street, curb and gutters, sidewalks, a little park area, stretch or strip alongside of it too,\u201d McBrayer said.<\/p>\n
City leaders said construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months, weather permitting.<\/p>\n
