HOUSTON \u2013 Mexico\u2019s president says her country will pursue legal action against the United States after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed a man Tuesday morning in east Houston. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, was a Mexican citizen who\u2019d been in Houston more than 30 years, according to his family. <\/p>\n
President Claudia Sheinbaum made the comments while speaking to reporters about the shooting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal is to go beyond diplomatic notes and what we raised at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, since we cannot allow the mistreatment of our brothers and sisters who are in the United States\u2014our fellow citizens. So we\u2019re proposing other measures,” Sheinbaum said. \u201cThere has been another tragic death of a fellow citizen in the United States due to detention issues, when their only \u201coffense\u201d is not having papers\u2014even though they were hired by a U.S. company. There\u2019s no reason for them to be in detention centers or for violence to be used. So, we\u2019re preparing legal measures\u2014obviously, more significant ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
ICE says the shooting happened during a \u201ctargeted enforcement operation\u201d in the 6800 block of Canal Street.<\/p>\n
The agency says officers attempted a traffic stop at about 6:50 a.m. and alleges Araujo attempted to flee the scene.<\/p>\n
ICE said, \u201cFrom information we\u2019re receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement office resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n
Araujo was shot on the right side of his body and video obtained by KPRC 2 shows medics arriving at the scene less than 10 minutes after the shooting.<\/p>\n
