{"id":36626,"date":"2025-11-05T16:48:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T16:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/36626\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T16:48:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T16:48:08","slug":"texas-voters-approve-3b-dementia-institute-to-fight-alzheimers-brain-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/36626\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas voters approve $3B dementia institute to fight Alzheimer\u2019s, brain diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Texas voters have approved a new weapon in the fight against brain diseases: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/22\/texas-initiative-dprit-dementia-research\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/22\/texas-initiative-dprit-dementia-research\/\">the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas<\/a>, or DPRIT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In Tuesday\u2019s  election, Texans weighed 17 proposed changes to the state constitution, including Proposition 14. Created with bipartisan support, the measure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/05\/texas-senate-endorses-3-billion-institute-to-research-dementia-treatment-cures\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/05\/texas-senate-endorses-3-billion-institute-to-research-dementia-treatment-cures\/\">sets aside $3 billion from the state\u2019s general revenue<\/a> over the next 10 years to support research into and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia, Alzheimer\u2019s, Parkinson\u2019s and related disorders. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI think the research DPRIT will support is going to fuel a generation-defining medical advance,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/doctors\/brendan-kelley\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Brendan Kelley<\/a>, a professor of neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. \u201cTexans have been bold enough to envision a future without dementia, and DPRIT really demonstrates a willingness to invest in that future.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A counterpart to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, DPRIT arrives at a pivotal moment. More than seven million Americans have dementia, including <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/81u8r\/https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2797274\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 10% of people 65 and older<\/a>. In 2020, Texas had almost half a million residents living with Alzheimer\u2019s disease, the most common form of dementia, according to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/alzheimers-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Texas Department of State Health Services<\/a>. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, with dozens of other lawmakers signing onto the bill as co-authors, sponsors or co-sponsors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A handful of lawmakers \u2014 such as State Rep. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ltgov.texas.gov\/2025\/05\/12\/lt-gov-dan-patrick-the-texas-senate-sends-one-of-my-top-priorities-the-dementia-prevention-and-research-institute-of-texas-dprit-to-gov-abbotts-desk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">applauded the passage of the bill<\/a>, which he had named as one of his priorities for the session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/22\/texas-initiative-dprit-dementia-research\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists and clinicians told The Dallas Morning News<\/a> that state funding from DPRIT could accelerate progress on stubborn questions in brain research, from clarifying the immune system\u2019s role in neurodegenerative diseases to uncovering risk factors and developing predictive artificial intelligence models. The institute will also award grants for recruiting academic talent and for building or expanding research programs and facilities at public and private organizations  across Texas, much like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/health-care\/2021\/11\/26\/cprit-awards-24-million-to-three-north-texas-universities-to-recruit-cancer-researchers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/health-care\/2021\/11\/26\/cprit-awards-24-million-to-three-north-texas-universities-to-recruit-cancer-researchers\/\">the state\u2019s cancer institute has<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uta.edu\/academics\/faculty\/profile?user=pedro.maia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pedro Maia<\/a>, a mathematics professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, is researching ways to leverage AI and machine learning to better understand Alzheimer\u2019s disease. He said he\u2019s eager for the wealth of specialized data \u2014 from brain scans to lifestyle factors \u2014 that DPRIT could unlock. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI expect for sure that new and very interesting data sets will be published and many new studies conducted,\u201d Maia said. \u201cI am hoping to see if that part of the funding will be used to incentivize research in the space of AI, machine learning and data-driven methods.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Both Maia and <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.utdallas.edu\/gwig\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gagan Wig<\/a>, a cognitive neuroscientist and professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Dallas, said DPRIT will help fill gaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/03\/07\/as-trump-seeks-cuts-to-funding-for-health-and-science-dallas-researchers-voice-concerns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">created by interruptions in federal support<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The institute \u201cgives us a lot of hope that we don\u2019t have to curtail any research we\u2019ve been doing or wait much longer,\u201d Wig said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe really are at the brink of some major discoveries, both in identifying biomarkers and interventions to slow down or possibly prevent disease,\u201d Wig added. \u201cIt\u2019s really fortunate that Texas voters have given approval to this and recognized the emergency and the need to really push the science forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Staff writer Emily Brindley contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Miriam Fauzia is a science reporting fellow at The Dallas Morning News.
