What To Know\u00a0<\/p>\nThe Houston Police Officers’ Union\u00a0is encouraging New York Police Department (NYPD) officers who are \u201cdisgusted\u201d with the election of Zohran Mamdani\u00a0as the city’s mayor to join its police department in Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNYPD, are you disgusted with the election of\u00a0Zohran Mamdani? Join us! The Houston Police Department is hiring police officers!\u201d\u00a0the\u00a0union wrote on Facebook.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Douglas Griffith, president of the Houston Police Officer\u2019s Union, told Newsweek that the department is short staffed and is recruiting “across the nation.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
“There’s a\u00a0lot\u00a0things going right here, and any law enforcement officer that just feels deflated by the comments of their mayor, they should come to Houston and give us a shot,” Griffith said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Why It Matters\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
More than 2 million New York City residents voted in the election, the largest turnout in a mayoral race in more than 50 years, according to the city\u2019s Board of Elections.\u00a0Mamdani will be the city\u2019s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become New York\u2019s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mamdani has been criticized\u00a0for comments he made in 2020\u00a0in which he said the city should\u00a0\u201cdefund this rogue agency,\u201d in reference to the NYPD. Mamdani has since said that\u00a0the comment does not\u00a0represent\u00a0his current agenda. <\/p>\n
He has said he will\u00a0maintain\u00a0NYPD staffing levels while also creating a\u00a0\u201cDepartment of Community Safety\u201d that would deploy mental health care teams to respond to certain calls.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What To Know\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Houston Police Officers’ Union lists several benefits to joining its police department, including competitive pay, supportive mayor and city council, supportive governor and lieutenant governor, supportive legislature\u00a0and \u201ca\u00a0cop\u2019s\u00a0chief who is a retired Texas Ranger, not a politician!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
In a later post, the union invited commenters to \u201cpost the best locations in Houston for New York-style pizza, bagels, cheesecake, hot\u00a0dogs\u00a0and street food.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you are a realtor in the Houston area, share your best listings for a\u00a0New York City cop to move down here,\u201d another post by the union read.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Griffith said the posts were not approved by the Houston Police Department, but the union knows that they are recruiting across the nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We don’t care where we get\u00a0the\u00a0bodies from. If we have good, hardworking officers,\u00a0that’s\u00a0what we want here in Houston,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Griffith said he believes people will leave the NYPD because of Mamdani’s election.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u00a0don’t\u00a0want to be in a city where\u00a0they’re\u00a0already scrutinized and already vilified, to be even further pushed down on that food chain,” Griffith said. “They want to work for a police department that’s going to appreciate them, going to allow them to do their jobs, and that’s something that we have here in Houston.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
“You have a Democrat socialist who has called for defunding the police. He has\u00a0literally called\u00a0NYPD officers racist and brutal, and\u00a0he’s\u00a0even made comments about them in the Israeli forces.\u00a0I think that\u00a0is going to be a morale killer for their department,” Griffith told Newsweek. “We have here in Houston a great Democratic mayor who is pro law enforcement, city council that’s pro law enforcement.”<\/p>\n
Newsweek\u00a0reached out to the NYPD and the New York City Police Benevolent Association for\u00a0comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
