Instead of taking the summer off, students from across the El Paso Independent School District are spending their vacation rehearsing, building sets and preparing to perform “Shrek The Musical” in a free community production.<\/p>\n
The show, presented by El Paso ISD Fine Arts, will run July 15 through July 18 at Coronado High School, with performances beginning at 7 p.m. each evening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and admission is free.<\/p>\n
The production is entirely student-driven, with participants taking on roles both on stage and behind the scenes. Students are responsible for acting, performing live music, designing costumes, constructing sets, operating lighting and sound, and handling other technical aspects of the musical.<\/p>\n
District leaders say the summer production gives students an opportunity to gain real-world theater experience while continuing to develop skills in collaboration, leadership and creativity outside the traditional school year.<\/p>\n
Fine Arts gives students the opportunity to discover their passions, build confidence, and develop skills that last a lifetime,” said Phillip Barraza, El Paso ISD Senior Director of Fine Arts. “This production is a celebration of our students’ creativity, teamwork, and dedication, and we invite our entire community to come experience what makes Fine Arts in El Paso ISD so special.<\/p>\n
Before each performance, from 5 to 6 p.m., families can meet Barraza and El Paso ISD Fine Arts educators to learn more about the district’s Fine Arts programs, which include theater, dance, music, mariachi and visual arts. District officials hope the event will encourage more students to explore the arts and become involved in future productions.<\/p>\n
The district says the performances highlight the talent and dedication of students from campuses across El Paso ISD while showcasing one of the region’s largest Fine Arts programs.<\/p>\n
