Several hundred Houstonians made their way through a rainy Saturday morning in\u00a0East Downtown to commemorate Lorenzo Salgado Araujo<\/a>, the Mexican man who was fatally shot this week by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the past week, community leaders, residents and officials have held and attended protests and vigils since 52-year-old Salgado’s death on Tuesday, demanding an independent probe and transparency about the details of the shooting. On Saturday, people crowded into the state office of the Service Employees International labor union, holding lit candles and praying quietly in front of a memorial.<\/p>\n

“My dad, me and my brothers, we embody the American dream,” said Lorenzo Salgado Jr. “It’s a hard moment to be an American.”<\/p>\n

The elder Salgado was a Mexican citizen and construction business owner who had lived in the United States for almost\u00a035 years, according to his family. He was picking up workers to drive them to a job site when he was stopped by ICE agents.<\/p>\n

ICE alleges that Salgado tried to evade arrest and\u00a0weaponize his vehicle after agents attempted to stop him. Some officials, however, have questioned those claims, especially after witnesses with\u00a0Salgado at the shooting said otherwise.<\/p>\n

In addition to Salgado’s sons,\u00a0Texas leaders\u00a0including U.S. Reps. from Houston, Sylvia Garcia, Christian Menefee, Al Green, Lizzie Fletcher and Gene Wu, were at the vigil.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Menefee said many Houstonians would not have stopped for an unmarked vehicle pursuing them and blamed the president for Salgado’s death<\/p>\n

“The commitment y’all have from me is we’re going to fight every single day for\u00a0Lorenzo, for this family, for this community and we are never going to forget that his blood is on Donald Trump’s hands,”\u00a0Menefee said. “Lorenzo Salgado Arajo was not a casualty. He is a human being who was murdered by our government.”<\/p>\n

Green said that he and other officials would continue to seek more information about the fatal shooting, and that he plans to bring articles of impeachment against Trump.<\/p>\n

INVESTIGATIONS: How will the feds investigate the ICE shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo \u2014 and can they be trusted?<\/a><\/p>\n

“We have not received justice for Ms. (Renee) Good. We have not received justice for Mr. (Alex) Pretti,” Green said, referencing the deaths of U.S. citizens at the hands of ICE agents in Minneapolis. “We have not received the justice, and his family has not. So we’ve got to bring justice to these causes, and we can do it in many ways.”<\/p>\n

Another of Salgado’s sons, Ronaldo, said his father was a relatively shy and private person who prided himself with his construction work. He said his father had a darker skin complexion and often was the target of judgmental comments that he sometimes took personally. But, he said, his father always tried to brush them off.<\/p>\n

Ronaldo Salgado said he hoped federal law enforcement will return his father’s belonging that they took as evidence, including his father’s wallet, his phone, his lunchbox and the van.<\/p>\n

“We need that van back so that my uncles and his other workers can continue doing the good work of building houses up in the Houston suburbs, to continue making houses for hundreds of Texans that are coming from inside the city, from outside the city,” he said.<\/p>\n

Ronaldo Salgado said he would continue demanding for an independent investigation into the shooting.<\/p>\n

“Every single person that I’ve met with, all the messages and comments, all the positive comments that I’ve been getting all say the same thing,” he\u00a0said. “That I’m making my father proud.
