Follow the investigations and see what our journalists uncover in North Texas and across the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__8MgJa flex flex-wrap text-gray-dark secondaryRoman secondaryRoman-10 text-center justify-center\">By signing up, you agree to our\u00a0<a class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__lU9-l border-b border-gray-dark hover_border-0 focus_border-0 active_border-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/help\/terms-of-service\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terms of Service<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__lU9-l border-b border-gray-dark hover_border-0 focus_border-0 active_border-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/help\/privacy-policy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Privacy Policy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The complex history of the lake dates back to the 1920s in a city then called Garza but now known as Lake Dallas, editor and manager of Carrollton City Limits Liz Castaneda, 54, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cDallas needed another lake for water, so they bought land from Garza, and that\u2019s where they made Lake Dallas,\u201d Castaneda said. \u201cIt was finished in 1927.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2048 \/ 1679\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/QUDWXRDBCJBUBI6ZTUQC3QS3MM.jpg\" alt=\"The construction of Lake Dallas lasted about three years, from 1924 to 1927.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The construction of Lake Dallas lasted about three years, from 1924 to 1927.<\/p>\n<p>Denton County Office of History and Culture<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">About 20 years later, the construction of four more reservoirs and dams started on the Trinity River in Denton County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The one next to Lake Dallas was Garza-Little Elm Dam and Reservoir, named for its proximity to Garza and Little Elm, according to the Denton County Office of History and Culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In 1955, construction finished, and U.S. Rep Frank Ikard, who represented the area at the time, passed a bill to rename Garza-Little Elm Dam to Lewisville Dam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">As Dallas grew, so did its need for a larger water supply, resulting in the deconstruction of the dam separating Lake Dallas and Garza Little-Elm Reservoir in 1957.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Once the dam was torn down, combining the two adjacent bodies of water, the name Lake Dallas was no longer used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThe city of Lake Dallas kept the name even after they joined the two lakes together,\u201d Castaneda said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Now, remember how the dam was renamed to Lewisville Dam? Keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In 1971, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers policy determined \u201clake\u201d would be used instead of dam and the combined body of water would take on the name of the previous dam. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Thus, Lewisville Lake was born. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">It was not until 1976 that the funds became available for the city to change lake signage to read \u201cLewisville Lake,\u201d which is where the majority of the name confusion came from. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Residents commonly use the name Lake Lewisville, although it is labeled Lewisville Lake on maps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a more extensive version of the lake\u2019s history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Did you know Lewisville Lake used to have a different name?
