That statement on the Orgain Bell & Tucker, LLP website encapsulates the career and accomplishments of legendary attorney Gilbert I. “Buddy” Low, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 93.<\/p>\n
He was a products liability, personal injury, and civil trial attorney for more than a half century with Orgain Bell & Tucker, a law firm that began at the turn of the century, on the heels of the Spindletop oil boom.<\/p>\n
Low was described as one of the most renowned trial lawyers in the State of Texas.<\/p>\n
According to the firm’s website, Gilbert Low, born in 1933 and raised in East Texas, graduated from The University of Texas School of Law in 1960. While in law school he supported himself through construction and pipeline work, along with proceeds from the G.I. Bill. Buddy Low served as the Texas Law Review Comment Editor, receiving an award for his contributions to the journal and graduating with highest honors.<\/p>\n
Shortly after graduating, Low went to work for Orgain, Bell & Tucker in Beaumont, where in 1999 Texas Lawyer named him the Best Plaintiff\u2019s Lawyer as well as Best Defense Lawyer in the Beaumont area.<\/p>\n

Although Buddy has emphasized personal injury work in his practice, there is little in the litigation arena that he has not done. Buddy has served as counsel for both plaintiffs and defendants. His practice has included litigation involving insurance coverage, antitrust, patents, trademarks, criminal RICO violations, pollution issues, class actions, contract disputes, and general business disputes.<\/p>\n
He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America, a Woodward White, Inc. publication, every year since 1993. In 1999, Texas Lawyer magazine, published by American Lawyer Media, recognized him as the best defense lawyer and best plaintiff\u2019s lawyer in Jefferson County. Buddy was named as one of the top 100 lawyers in the state in the 2003 and 2004 editions of \u201cTexas Super Lawyers,\u201d a Thompson Reuters publication.<\/p>\n

He graduated from Stephen F. Austin College in 1954 and received the school\u2019s \u201cHall of Fame\u201d Award in 1994. He received his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1960. While attending the University of Texas School of Law, he was a Comment Editor on the Texas Law Review, a member of Phi Alpha Delta, and a member of the Order of the Coif.<\/p>\n
Shortly after graduating, Low went to work for the law firm of Orgain, Bell & Tucker in Beaumont Texas, where in 1999 Texas Lawyer named him the Best Plaintiff\u2019s Lawyer as well as Best Defense Lawyer in the Beaumont area.<\/p>\n
Buddy was Chairman of the Texas Supreme Court Professional Ethics Committee for over 25 years and is currently Vice-Chairman of the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee. He is a former President of the Jefferson County Bar Association and is a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates.<\/p>\n
In 1991, Gilbert Low endowed the Gilbert I. Low Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Law, which recognizes the work of student editors of the Texas Law Review, and the Carl Parker Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Law.<\/p>\n
Several years, ago, Jefferson County commissioners honored Low, the late Walter Umphrey, and Wayne Reaud, with busts depicting the three men. They’re in the courtyard just off to the side of the main entrance to the Jefferson County Courthouse where there are already similar pieces of art to recognize other well-known pioneering attorneys.<\/p>\n

A gathering of Mr. Low\u2019s family and friends will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a service of remembrance at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 17, 2026, at St. Stephen\u2019s Episcopal Church, 4090 Delaware Street, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard\u2019s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont.
