Social media posts raised concerns about cracks on the Harbor Bridge. The contractor says they’re expected surface cracks, not structural damage.<\/p>\n

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 The company in charge of the Harbor Bridge Project is responding to videos circulating on social media that appear to show cracks on the bridge’s towering support pylons.<\/p>\n

After seeing the videos, 3NEWS went to the bridge to get a closer look. While the markings may appear alarming, Flatiron\/Dragados says they are expected surface cracks in the concrete and are not an indication of a structural issue.<\/p>\n

In a statement to 3NEWS, Flatiron\/Dragados said surface cracks in concrete bridge support structures are “a common and anticipated characteristic of the material behavior” and are routinely addressed using industry-standard maintenance procedures.<\/p>\n

The contractor said crews are currently treating the surface cracks and reapplying the bridge’s opaque white finish. During that process, officials said the cosmetic cracks can temporarily appear more noticeable.<\/p>\n

According to the project, crews have completed the work on the north pylon of the U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge and expect to finish the south pylon by Friday.<\/p>\n

FULL STATEMENT: Thank you for the opportunity to address the concern. Surface cracks in concrete bridge support structures are a common and anticipated characteristic of the material behavior and will be routinely addressed in accordance with industry-standard procedures as part of ongoing maintenance. During this process, normal surface treatment activities can temporarily make the cosmetic cracks appear more pronounced. Crews have completed the process on the US 181 Harbor Bridge north pylon, including reapplying the aesthetic opaque white finish, with the operation expected to be completed on the south pylon by Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
