{"id":376533,"date":"2026-07-17T06:31:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T06:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/376533\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T06:31:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T06:31:15","slug":"viewer-videos-show-risky-lane-changes-near-the-highway-6-and-texas-avenue-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/376533\/","title":{"rendered":"Viewer videos show risky lane changes near the Highway 6 and Texas Avenue exit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) &#8211; Viewer-submitted videos show drivers cutting across lanes at the last second near the Texas Avenue exit along Highway 6 \u2014 a stretch that has seen traffic pattern adjustments during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.txdot.gov\/projects\/projects-studies\/bryan\/sh6-central-bcs.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.txdot.gov\/projects\/projects-studies\/bryan\/sh6-central-bcs.html\">TxDOT\u2019s Big 6 construction project.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">TxDOT Public Engagement Specialist Kendra Welch said the Texas Avenue exit configuration is the same one drivers have been using since a switch earlier this year, but TxDOT added more signage after noticing confusion in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe Texas Avenue exit is still going to look the same as it did before the switch that we did back in March. That\u2019s not changing. We\u2019ve actually added some extra signage along the way since we\u2019ve done that switch,\u201d Welch said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Welch said the safest choice for drivers who miss the exit is to keep going rather than trying to force their way across lanes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIf you miss your exit, don\u2019t panic. Just go up to the next exit, and you can do a U-turn and come back to Texas Avenue,\u201d Welch said.<\/p>\n<p>Crash numbers (Jan. 1, 2025\u2013July 16, 2026)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to TxDOT\u2019s Crash Records Information System data provided in a Highway 6 crash dataset, there were 64 crashes along Highway 6 from Jan. 1, 2025, through July 16, 2026. The same dataset shows that each full year from 2020 through 2025 ranged between 25 and 35 crashes, meaning the most recent year-and-a-half total is higher than any single year in the data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Welch emphasized reduced speed limits and driver awareness through the work zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cMake sure you\u2019re slowing down. That reduced speed limit is really important, not just for our workers, but also for you. We want everyone to be safe on our roadways,\u201d Welch said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Since Jan. 1, crash counts are trending higher this year.
