The Salvation Army of North Texas has seen an increase in service demand this summer, with requests ranging from meal distribution to camp tuition assistance.<\/p>\n
At nine of the organization\u2019s 13 food pantries, first-time visits are up 26% since January, said Christina Cavalier, managing director of the Salvation Army of North Texas. At the nonprofit\u2019s primary Fort Worth location \u2014 the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Social Service Center \u2014 food distribution increased from 8,986 meals in May 2025 to 12,164 this past May.<\/p>\n
Cavalier said the nonprofit always anticipates an increase in demand during the summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe call summer the hungriest time of the year because a lot of the families whose children are on free and reduced lunches at school, those families are now feeding their children at home,\u201d she added. \u201cWe expect that there\u2019s an increase. It\u2019s just been a bit more dramatic (this year).\u201d<\/p>\n
The nonprofit\u2019s Arlington Family Life Center, a yearlong shelter for families experiencing homelessness, has seen double its usual requests for summer day camp tuition assistance, a seasonal resource provided to local families.<\/p>\n
Housing needs have also increased, Cavalier said. About 1,300 people sleep every night in the Salvation Army\u2019s six shelter-designated North Texas locations, including the Mabee Center.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s because a lot of times families who are unhoused will try and live in their cars, and then it becomes too hot outside for that to be safe,\u201d Cavalier said. \u201cSo they come to us seeking safe shelter for their families.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ongoing summer weather led the Salvation Army last week to open 13 cooling centers in five North Texas counties<\/a>, including three in Tarrant County \u2014 the Mabee Center, the Arlington Corps Community Center and the Northside Corps Community Center.<\/p>\n The nonprofit triggers heat relief protocol when regional forecasts predict temperatures of 100 degrees or higher for several days, or when the heat index is expected to be higher than 105 degrees for more than two days in a row.<\/p>\n Tarrant County Salvation Army locations<\/p>\n These sites include community centers, homeless shelters, adult rehabilitation centers, thrift stores and emergency family service hubs.<\/p>\n J.E. & L.E.
