{"id":378383,"date":"2026-07-19T03:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T03:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/378383\/"},"modified":"2026-07-19T03:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T03:12:10","slug":"el-paso-reports-1-cyclosporiasis-case-officials-say-no-link-to-outbreaks-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/378383\/","title":{"rendered":"El Paso reports 1 cyclosporiasis case; officials say no link to outbreaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 El Paso health officials are urging residents not to panic after the city received a report of the cyclosporiasis infection in a man in his 60s who has since recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hector Ocaranza said the City of El Paso Department of Public Health received the report and conducted an epidemiological investigation, but did not determine a specific source of the infection.<\/p>\n<p>Ocaranza said the case is not related to the outbreak being seen across the country or in South Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness that can cause explosive diarrhea. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not uncommon for us to see some cases of cyclosporiasis here in El Paso, although it is not very common,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Ocaranza said most people should not be concerned, but warned the illness can be more severe for people who are immunosuppressed, meaning they have a very weak immune system. <\/p>\n<p>He said those patients may experience diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain that can last for several weeks, and in some cases may require hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p>For people who are otherwise healthy, Ocaranza said symptoms may last only a few days and can go away without treatment. <\/p>\n<p>RECOMMENDED: <a href=\"https:\/\/kfoxtv.com\/news\/nation-world\/texas-reports-dozens-of-cyclosporiasis-cases-tied-to-contaminated-fresh-produce?SRC=LINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Texas reports dozens of cyclosporiasis cases tied to contaminated fresh produce<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He said that it can lead to underreporting because some people recover without seeing a health care provider.<\/p>\n<p>He also said people should seek medical care if vomiting or diarrhea lasts more than five to seven days. <\/p>\n<p>Ocaranza also recommended contacting a health care provider if someone cannot eat or drink, has less urine output than normal, or has blood in their stool. He said anyone who is not feeling well or \u201cnot looking well\u201d should get checked.<\/p>\n<p>To reduce the risk of gastrointestinal infections, Ocaranza emphasized good hygiene, including washing hands before eating and after using the restroom, and cleaning surfaces used to prepare food.<\/p>\n<p>He advised washing vegetables thoroughly with running water. <\/p>\n<p>For leafy vegetables such as lettuce, he recommended removing the outer leaves, separating the remaining leaves and washing them \u201creally, really well,\u201d including using a vegetable scrub or brush.
