UTSA coach Jeff Traylor paused for 15 seconds to gather his thoughts when asked if Texas high school athletes should receive compensation for their name, image and likeness.<\/p>\n
Specifically, Traylor was asked where he stands on a similar measure as Florida, where athletes are able to monetize NIL opportunities.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d Traylor said after a long pause during Sunday\u2019s media session at the Texas High School Coaches Association convention. \u201cI just don\u2019t think that can be good. I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure I\u2019m going to be frowned upon from my recruits hearing me say all this. I just don\u2019t think that\u2019s good. I\u2019m against it personally. I think we need to keep Texas high school football as pure as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
A longtime high school coach who is entering his seventh season at UTSA, Traylor said there\u2019s \u201cso much to be gained by having a great Texas high school experience and then getting your opportunity to go make money.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Texas coach Neal Brown has fond memories of Marcus Jones<\/a>, a record-setting kick returner who he signed at Troy.<\/p>\n Jones would later transfer to the University of Houston, where he won the Paul Hornung Award<\/a> as the nation\u2019s most versatile player and was an All-American selection<\/a>.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cVery lightly recruited coming out of high school,\u201d said Brown, who recruited Jones out of Enterprise, Ala. \u201cPeople say he was too small, but he competed.\u201d<\/p>\n Jones, a cornerback who also saw playing time on offense, finished his career tied for the NCAA record with nine touchdowns.<\/p>\n \u201cOne of the toughest guys, mentally and physically, that I\u2019ve ever coached,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI\u2019m zero surprised at the success he\u2019s had.\u201d<\/p>\n A third-round draft pick by the New England Patriots, Jones is entering his fifth NFL season. He is a two-time All-Pro selection.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat a great success story,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n UTEP ready for non-conference challenge<\/p>\n UTEP has a tough non-conference schedule in Year 3 under coach Scotty Walden.<\/p>\n The Miners open the season at Oklahoma and visit Michigan in Week 3. UTEP also hosts Oregon State.<\/p>\n \u201cOur schedule, certainly early on, doesn\u2019t do us a lot of favors,\u201d Walden said. \u201cBut that\u2019s exactly why we are here, it\u2019s exactly why we play the game. If you don\u2019t want to compete against the best then why are you playing, why are we coaching?\u00a0 We\u2019re going to know exactly who our team is and we\u2019re going to be battle-tested going into Mountain West Conference play.\u201d<\/p>\n UTEP will move from Conference USA to Mountain West this season.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Big step up for Texas State<\/p>\n Before he arrived at this year\u2019s high school coaching convention, Texas State coach G.J. Kinne celebrated one of his kids\u2019 birthdays on Saturday.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had a birthday party with bunnies, pigs and chickens and all kinds of stuff,\u201d Kinne said.<\/p>\n Kinne has long been a part of the Texas High School Coaches Association convention.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a place I used to come on vacation with my father,\u201d said Kinne, whose father was a longtime Texas high school football coach.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n This is a big season for the Bobcats, who are coming off three straight bowl-win seasons and now move to the Pac-12.<\/p>\n \u201cJust something new, a change of scenery, can be good,\u201d said Kinne, who is 23-16 in his first three seasons in San Marcos. \u201cGoing to the Pac, being on a larger stage and having every game on national television, that\u2019s something\u00a0\u2014 especially when we are competing against some of the teams we recruit against\u00a0\u2014 to be able to say, \u2018Hey, you don\u2019t have to get on Hulu or YouTube TV or one of these streaming devices and find the game. We\u2019ll be on every national television cable. That part is big.
