From playing on the community fields of Austin to standing under the brightest lights in sports, Ismail Elfath\u2019s road to soccer\u2019s most prestigious stage started locally.<\/p>\n
The UT graduate and longtime Austin resident became the first American to serve as the lead referee for a FIFA World Cup semifinal on Wednesday when he officiated the matchup between England and Argentina in Atlanta. The assignment is the latest mile marker in a long career that has taken Elfath from recreational leagues in Central Texas to the sport\u2019s highest level.<\/p>\n
For Longhorns, the appointment represented more than another local story. It marked the first time a former UT student stood in the middle of a men\u2019s World Cup semifinal as a match official, highlighting a story written on the pitches of Austin for more than two decades.<\/p>\n
Elfath emigrated from Casablanca, Morocco, to Austin in 2001. His next step was enrolling at Texas, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering while also playing club soccer. It was during his time at the University that he discovered a new way to be involved in the game.<\/p>\n
After becoming frustrated with officiating during an Austin Men\u2019s Soccer Association match, Elfath attended a referee certification clinic and began officiating youth and amateur matches throughout Central Texas. He eventually climbed the ranks, reaching Major League Soccer and FIFA competition.<\/p>\n
The road to the World Cup included one of the biggest challenges of his career. After serving as the fourth official for the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, Elfath underwent a double knee surgery that kept him sidelined for more than a year and nearly ended his career. His return to officiate another World Cup became uncertain.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a dream come true \u2014 again,\u201d Elfath said in an interview with U.S. Soccer before this year\u2019s tournament. \u201cI already had an amazing experience in Qatar in 2022, but after being 13 months with a double knee surgery, which took me very close to retirement, this second World Cup is so much sweeter.\u201d<\/p>\n
World Cup referees are evaluated after every match, and the strongest performers advance to the later rounds of the tournament. Elfath worked three matches during the 2026 World Cup before receiving Wednesday\u2019s semifinal assignment.<\/p>\n
His officiating crew included assistant referees Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, giving the United States a full American team for one of the tournament\u2019s most-watched matches.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no better platform to showcase how proud I am to represent the USA, my community and to make my country proud,\u201d Elfath said in his U.S. Soccer interview.<\/p>\n
For Texas, Elfath\u2019s success adds another bridge between the Forty Acres and one of the world\u2019s biggest sporting events. A former engineering student once steeped in coursework, club soccer and local refereeing carried the whistle in one of soccer\u2019s most coveted matches.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have the best seat in the house, in the middle of the beautiful game,\u201d Elfath told the Houston Chronicle before Wednesday\u2019s semifinal.<\/p>\n
Wednesday\u2019s match represented more than another game on Elfath\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9.
