Somewhere in Austin’s affluent Hyde Park neighborhood, there is a laidback, amateur weed dealer living in a run-down mansion. As a stoner and slacker, he cares for nothing, until he’s forced to solve an escalating mystery involving a cast of the city’s shadiest characters.

Meet Peter Key, Austin’s most unlikely private investigator and the protagonist in Jack Friday’s queer mystery novel, Killer Vibes. The book, which was released last week, follows Peter as he inherits a small fortune from his elusive uncle, roping him into a whirlwind of family secrets, dangerous threats and extreme stakes. The book is the first in the Peter Key Mysteries series.

“Peter’s real strength is that he’s underestimated all the time and incredibly intuitive, and he doesn’t miss details,” said author John Fram, who uses Friday as his pen name for the series. “And that’s really what you need in a detective.”

Fram said he decided to use an alias to separate this series from his other work and explore a different style of writing. He is known for his queer horror novels, including The Bright Lands, No Road Home and The Midnight Knock. He said the pen name has become a sort of character he can have fun with.

Killer Vibes, by Austin author Jack Friday, is the first in the Peter Key Mysteries series.

“Over time Jack Friday is becoming his own person,” Fram said on a Friday afternoon outside First Light Books. “I don’t want to say he writes differently than John Fram, but it is funny.”

When he sat down to start writing, Fram kept hearing Peter Key’s voice in his head telling him this book was different. Fram said he couldn’t just insert a ghost to make it more like his previous work.

“It felt wrong to try to shove [horror] into a story that didn’t seem to want it,” he said. “So it was just following this character’s voice, following him into this world, and realizing that I was writing something dramatically different than anything I had done before.”

Beyond the plot, the novel’s unmistakable sense of place makes the setting and characters feel intertwined. The Austin landmarks mentioned are subtle, from a meet-cute at the Walgreens on 45th and Guadalupe to a dangerous encounter on Lake Austin.

The city isn’t just the backdrop — it’s a complicated social and economic landscape woven throughout the book, providing context for the strange characters Peter meets. Fram said the book’s characterization of Austin helped him express his frustrations with the city he calls home.

“We have entered a very new, strange stage of global capitalism, where there’s literally not enough money circulating at the bottom to support the whole structure,” he said, “and the consequences of that you’re seeing everywhere.”

Fram said many of the antagonistic characters represent Austin’s stereotype as a growing “brand,” including corporate tech bros looking to flip historic properties for profit and eccentric personalities masking hidden agendas. These characters serve as commentary on the city’s aggressive market boom and politically progressive facade.

Despite that, Fram said he wants his readers to have fun with the series. Peter Key provides a fresh take on sleuthing with his unconventional techniques, making for a suspenseful and laugh-out-loud read.

Fram said four more Peter Key novels have been green-lit. The second one comes out in June.

Somewhere in Austin’s affluent Hyde Park neighborhood, there is a laidback, amateur weed dealer living in a run-down…

[11
132,134,133,17557,59455,134064,134065,134066,120396,134067,27
post-379414","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news","tag-authors","tag-hyde-park","tag-jack-fram","tag-jack-friday","tag-killer-vibes","tag-novels","tag-peter-key-mysteries","tag-texas
["GET
