Samsung Electronics America said Sunday<\/a> that 739 roles at its Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey campus have been affected by its planned move of the consumer electronics unit’s headquarters to Texas. A majority of those workers received relocation offers, though others were let go, the company said without specifying numbers. <\/p>\n

At Samsung Electronics America’s Plano, Texas office, roughly 100 workers \u2014 among them employees in the mobile division \u2014 lost their jobs, Reuters reported, based on people with direct knowledge of the situation. Samsung Electronics America, known as SEA, handles the company’s consumer electronics operations in the United States and is separate from its semiconductor business. <\/p>\n

The 739 figure comes from a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with New Jersey, according to The Next Web<\/a>. SEA employs roughly 1,200 workers in New Jersey, meaning the affected roles represent close to 62% of the site’s workforce. Internal documents reviewed by Reuters show the company informed employees on June 30 that it was carrying out an “enterprise-wide reduction-in-force” with a “significant number of impacts.” <\/p>\n

“This process may lead to changes in our workforce structure, such as employees who are unable to relocate, or certain functions that are optimized to ensure our roles align to key business priorities,” Samsung said in a statement. <\/p>\n

Samsung’s IT services affiliate Samsung SDS America separately flagged that 179 roles could be cut at Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, in a June notice filed under state law. Samsung said those changes were tied to a relocation of Samsung SDS America’s North American headquarters and were unrelated to layoffs or restructuring. <\/p>\n

The job cuts come less than a year after Samsung announced in June that it would move SEA’s headquarters<\/a> from Englewood Cliffs to its existing campus in Plano by the end of 2026, and less than a year after it held a public opening of its New Jersey offices in September. New Jersey officials and business groups criticized the move at the time, with some pointing to Texas’s lower taxes and business-friendly regulations as a draw. <\/p>\n

The cuts reflect a stark divide within the broader Samsung organization. Samsung’s chip business is projected to deliver an approximately 19-fold surge in second-quarter profit on the back of AI demand, even as the mobile division braces for what would be its first recorded quarterly loss. Across SEA’s consumer electronics lineup, rising chip prices have squeezed margins, while Apple presses the company in smartphones and Chinese manufacturers such as TCL and Hisense compete aggressively in televisions and home appliances. <\/p>\n

A current SEA employee said colleagues fear that the latest reductions are a precursor to further job losses and a merging of the appliance, home entertainment, and mobile divisions as the company directs more resources toward chips. Samsung denied that any sweeping, company-wide overhaul of its consumer product operations is taking place. <\/p>\n
