Upon the exhale, standing outside\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairmarketaustin.com\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fair Market<\/a> on East Fifth Street, he looked up at the sky, still processing the night, with, a small frown forming in the corner of his mouth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m devastated,\u201d he said with a sigh.<\/p>\n<p>The software engineer from the Dallas-Fort Worth area lost his first boxing match before the bell could toll at the end of the first round. He was expecting to throw a few jabs and an overhand, but was caught off guard by his opponent going south paw \u2014 something he didn\u2019t have much experienced with.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>In fact, no one fighting that night inside an east-side repurposed warehouse, had all that much experience. Yet hundreds showed up to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/luma.com\/2huqfdk0\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">White Collar Fight Night<\/a>,&#8221; a six-fight showcase of amateurs who typically work desk jobs. When the doctor working the match couldn\u2019t stop the bleeding, it was called before the 2-minute round ended.<\/p>\n<p>Shaking his head in disappointment, Nava accepted the defeat as his opponent\u2019s arm was raised into the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to keep going,\u201d the 26-year-old told the American-Statesman postfight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for the events, billed online as both an athletics competition and a networking opportunity, topped $100. The dress code was &#8220;cocktail attire,&#8221; per a digital flyer. The competitors were &#8220;founders, engineers, and sales people from Austin,&#8221; the event listing said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zanuttopt.com\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Seth Zanutto<\/a>, who organized the fight night, said he didn&#8217;t turn a profit after accounting for expenses, but he hopes to replicate the effort, possibly next spring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll sorts of stuff that amateur boxing doesn\u2019t really provide \u2026 we wanted it to be a big production,\u201d\u00a0Zanutto said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"White collar fight night founder and boxing coach Seth Zanutto tapes up fighter Milton Nava\u2019s hand as he trains at Richard Lord's Boxing Gym in Austin, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025. He worked with some college kids, but had an idea in March 2024 and later told a friend about it over dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery adult I&#8217;ve ever met is like, \u2018Oh, I want to box,\u2019\u201d Zanutto said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>He understands the challenges \u2014 finding a coach, a gym and a training program \u2014 for a laymen learning how to box for the first time. He also understood that amateur boxing isn&#8217;t as compelling for the general public compared to watching professionals, but he had a counter for that: putting regular guys with white collar jobs into a boxing training camp. They would sell tickets to friends and family for the culminating fight night, complete with introduction videos, a VIP seating and walk-out songs.<\/p>\n<p>He and Benjamin Hill, who works in event planning, created a website, posted flyers and started texting anyone they knew to get participants.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty people were interested in taking the ring. Only 12 got the chance to fight Oct. 24. But the training for his bout was unlike anything he experienced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One extra motivator kept him going on days the 30-year-old didn&#8217;t feel like working out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you American-Statesman<\/p>\n<p>Know the fighters<\/p>\n<p>The competitors, according to\u00a0the flyer, ranged from working at Fortune 500 companies to local startups,\u00a0of which Austin has many. Not only was the work experience diverse, but so was the athletic experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>James was accustomed to team sports. Fighters Andrew\u00a0Eckhoff and Jesse Paterson previously trained in jujutsu\u00a0and muay Thai, respectively. Jujutsu is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japanesemartialartscenter.com\/learnmore-jujutsu-in-ann-arbor-vs-bjj\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> a Japanese martial art and a system of close combat <\/a>that uses throws, joint locks, kicks and strikes\u00a0to subdue opponents. Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/thaiboxing.com\/about\/muay-thai-history\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Thai Boxing Association<\/a>, and features kicks, elbows, knees and other fighting techniques.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">\u201cIn muay Thai, you are preparing for kicks, right? So you are going to raise your shins to block the kicks,&#8221; Paterson explained. &#8220;You don\u2019t have to worry about that in boxing. The impact of what he was doing for the 12 weeks of training hit him during his first heavy sparring session. He was struck with a left hook \u201cpretty dang hard\u201d and had a headache for about a day afterward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like \u2018Damn, what did I just get myself into?\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">But he had a little extra inspiration to continue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">\u201cMy grandfather grew up in an orphanage and he didn&#8217;t have a ton of money, so boxing was one of the ways that he made money when he was growing up,\u201d said Paterson, who lost his bout.<\/p>\n<p>Eckhoff, a sales manager from the Boston, heard about the event from a friend of a friend. He didn\u2019t have any previous boxing experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to get better technical skills and stuff,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Get faster, just learning the skills and (there was) exponential improvement for me and everybody just with the training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 34-year-old fought 27-year-old Truett Brinkman.<\/p>\n<p>Brinkman said he boxed for about a month nearly four years ago but lost interest. Learning about White Collar Fight Night the event and the challenge it posed enticed him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow you do is dependent on you, so it\u2019s that high pressure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">Before the fight, Brinkman said he experienced some butterflies, but didn\u2019t really feel nervous. His poise showed\u00a0in the ring.<\/p>\n<p>It looked as though both boxers were evenly matched, but after a few hits from Brinkman, Eckhoff hit the canvas. Brinkman won by technical knockout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">He didn\u2019t want to go out brawling, so Brinkman \u2014\u00a0who works in the restaurant industry \u2014\u00a0focused on his combos and \u201cput on a good show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the training I got to see it through. What could double as a wedding venue, was suddenly an athletic arena.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Six matches including competitors of varying skill took place, with more experienced fighters performing later.<\/p>\n<p>One of those main event fighters was Abraham Obubo. He was inactive from boxing for over a year, but decided follow his passion and fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would probably do this again next year,&#8221; said \u00a0Obubo,\u00a0who won by decision.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0others who spoke to the American-Statesman, the decision to fight again isn&#8217;t quite as clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Said Brinkman after his win: &#8220;I think I might find a new challenge.
