{"id":380972,"date":"2026-07-21T14:14:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T14:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/380972\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T14:14:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T14:14:08","slug":"the-8-pound-mega-torta-that-draws-diners-to-a-150-challenge-in-dallas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/380972\/","title":{"rendered":"The 8-pound Mega Torta that draws diners to a $150 challenge in Dallas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oscar and Haydee Rodriguez, owners of Tortas Insurgentes, created in April the Mega Torta, a massive Mexican sandwich that looks more like a feast than a simple sandwich.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The base of this monumental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/restaurant-news\/article\/el-rincon-del-d-f-mexican-world-cup-soccer-torta-22298150.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">torta<\/a> is an oversize bun filled with one pound of breaded chicken, one pound of breaded beef, one pound of ham, one pound of sauasages,\u00a0half pound of chorizo, quarter pound of bacon, three eggs, an avocado, beans, cheese, pineapple, tomato, onion and\u00a0jalape\u00f1o.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Weighing over 8 pounds and measuring 14 inches long and 5 inches tall, this torta can feed between 10 and 12 people, but there\u2019s a challenge that several people have attempted \u2014 and only<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/4975744029319135\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\"> James Webb<\/a>, an Australian influencer who specializes in food challenges, has succeeded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who wants to come and take on the challenge is welcome to do so,\u201d said Haydee Rodriguez, co-owner of the restaurant. \u201cIf they eat the Mega Torta in less than 20 minutes, they win $150 and don\u2019t have to pay for it. But if they don\u2019t make it, they have to pay for the meal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mega Torta costs $75. The restaurant sells it not only to those who eat it there \u2014 with family or friends \u2014 but also for events and parties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its combination of flavors and textures captures the essence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/2025\/01\/24\/mexico-city-is-the-capital-of-tortas-and-we-have-a-piece-of-that-in-dallas-fort-worth\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">classic street tortas<\/a>\u00a0in Mexico City, where this type of torta, which includes a little (or, in this case, a lot) of every ingredient, is known as a Torta Cubana.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a restaurant serving Mexico City cuisine, and the torta is par excellence one of the most popular street foods in the Mexican capital,\u201d said Oscar Rodriguez, co-owner of the restaurant. \u201cWhen we thought about making this giant\u00a0torta, we said, \u2018Why not?\u2019 And it actually worked out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, giant foods have found a loyal following on social media, with challenges drawing international influencers to restaurants in Dallas to test their skills as consumers of massive meals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Mega Torta, Tortas Insurgentes serves traditional-sized tortas, tacos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/2025\/01\/17\/this-street-style-food-in-d-fw-was-born-out-of-a-need-to-feel-something-of-mexico-city\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">quesadillas<\/a>\u00a0and other classic dishes from Mexico City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those who want to take on the Mega Torta challenge should contact the restaurant beforehand, as the bread is made to order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tortas Insurgentes has several locations in the D-FW area, but the Mega Torta is only served at the location at 3701 W.
