COTULLA, Texas \u2013 A shelter-in-place was activated Tuesday for a campground west of Cotulla near KOA Lake, the La Salle County Fire Rescue<\/a> said through a social media post.<\/p>\n

First responders are urging residents near the KOA Campground to be aware of the mandatory shelter-in-place notice. <\/p>\n

The urgency comes after water levels rose in the Nueces River. The National Weather Service<\/a> said the river rose to 24 feet at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n

After nearly 480 billion gallons of rain<\/a> fell in the Hill Country last week, roughly 350 first responders<\/a> were sent to La Salle County on Monday in preparation for significant flooding that could impact the area.<\/p>\n

Although the forecast for Cotulla is clear, the Nueces River continues to flow at major levels downstream, prompting road closures and residents to plan for potential flooding in the area.<\/p>\n

Spirits are high in the community even as floodwaters continue to rise. <\/p>\n

“We\u2019re in a drought, we got water, ain\u2019t nothing to complain about,” a resident told KSAT.<\/p>\n

Others acknowledged the reality of the situation. <\/p>\n

“It\u2019s kind of scary because you\u2019re like, OK, like it\u2019s getting real. Especially in a town where everybody knows everybody,\u201c one resident said. \u201dI got my sisters, nephews, and all of them, you know, so it\u2019s kind of sad.”<\/p>\n

Residents who have prepared evacuation plans said they are ready to leave at a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all packed up, ready to go. We have bags packed. We have our, we have three dogs. We have the cage. We have their leashes. Just be ready,\u201d another resident said.<\/p>\n

KSAT\u2019s Weather Authority team projects the river to stay at a major flood stage heading into the weekend<\/a>, inundating areas along the river. Extreme caution should be used anywhere downstream along the river.<\/p>\n

Officials have implemented a color-coded alert system<\/a>. As of Monday night, the county moved to a \u201cyellow alert,\u201d which urges residents to prepare an emergency bag and be ready to evacuate if needed.<\/p>\n

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter for displaced residents. A separate pet shelter is available at the county fairgrounds, La Salle County Judge Leodoro Martinez III said.<\/p>\n
