San Antonio Democrat Johnny Garcia, who is running to represent Texas\u2019 red-leaning 35th District in Congress, blew past his Trump-backed Republican opponent in second-quarter fundraising<\/p>\n

Garcia reported raising $676,140 during the quarter, which ran from April 1 through June 30. He also reported that his campaign has no debt, with $323,108 cash on hand.\u200b<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, his opponent, Trump-endorsed Republican Carlos De La Cruz, reported raising $532,653 and ended the quarter with $272,388 cash on hand and $116,500 in debt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful to have the support of grassroots donors and hardworking Texans,\u201d Garcia\u2019s campaign said in a statement. \u201cEvery investment in our campaign is proof that Texas voters are ready to elect leaders who will actually lower their costs, fight Washington\u2019s corruption, and keep our community safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Texas 35th District was redrawn last year by the state\u2019s GOP legislature to give Republicans an edge, as previously reported by the Current<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Garcia\u2019s fundraising is good news for Democrats, who believe they can win the redrawn 35th District, even though it\u2019s an \u201cR+4\u201d district, according to Garcia\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n

After being redrawn, TX-35 now includes red-leaning Wilson, Karnes and Guadalupe counties as well as the southeastern edge of more moderate Bexar County.<\/p>\n

The former Bexar County Sheriff\u2019s deputy earned the Democratic nomination after defeating Maureen Galindo in the Democratic primary \u2013 an unusual opponent<\/a> who grabbed national headlines <\/a>after advocating to send \u201cAmerican Zionists\u201d to internment camps.<\/p>\n

Her comments received rebuke from national Democrats, who described them as \u201cantisemitic.\u201d<\/p>\n
