San Antonio Animal\u00a0Care Services is\u00a0waiving adoption fees\u00a0through Sunday, July 26, as\u00a0the city’s municipal\u00a0animal shelter faces\u00a0overcrowding following\u00a0a surge in\u00a0pets brought\u00a0in after recent\u00a0severe weather.<\/p>\n
The shelter’s kennels\u00a0are currently housing\u00a0more than 550\u00a0animals, leaving the\u00a0facility over capacity. Shelter officials said\u00a0the increase is\u00a0due to the\u00a0combination of the\u00a0busy summer intake\u00a0season, weather-related\u00a0calls from last\u00a0week and recent\u00a0animal welfare enforcement\u00a0actions.<\/p>\n
To\u00a0create space for\u00a0the continued influx\u00a0of animals arriving\u00a0each day, Animal\u00a0Care Services is\u00a0urging residents to\u00a0adopt or foster\u00a0a shelter pet.<\/p>\n
Adoption fees have been reduced to $0 through Sunday. Every adopted pet will go home spayed or neutered, vaccinated and equipped with a registered microchip at no cost to adopters.<\/p>\n
“We do not have kennel space for more than a couple hundred pets and friendly tested pets can be co-housed but it does not create the type of kennel space we need given all the pets we have in our kennels now,” an ACS spokesperson said. “Adoptions rescues and fosters are the real solutions.”<\/p>\n
Animal Care Services said they will provide foster families with all necessary supplies and veterinary care.<\/p>\n
