Investigators say a large crowd then gathered, making it difficult for officials to work the scene. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Lubbock Police Department was called to a home on East Auburn Street, near Parkway Drive inside of Northeast Loop 289, at 1:59 a.m. Responding officers found Stephon Jones, 37, with a gunshot wound. Jones died at the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to an LPD news release, while police were on-scene, a large crowd began to gather, \u201ccreating difficulties in officers\u2019 ability to secure and process the scene\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The department reports the growing presence and unruliness of the crowd prompted a callout and response by LPD\u2019s Special Response Group. This additional callout allowed officers and forensic investigators to fully process and investigate the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to LPD, the initial investigation shows Jones and someone else arrived outside the home of Robert Kinney, 65. There was a verbal then physical altercation between Kinney and Jones. Police say Kinney then shot Jones.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Robert Kinney\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/YWIVI6NHPNHYHPWUL4CA72B7DA.png\" width=\"980\" height=\"1216\" \/>Robert Kinney(photo from Lubbock County Detention Center)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kinney has been arrested and is now facing a murder charge. He is held in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Lubbock Metro Special Crimes Unit is now handling the investigation. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 KCBD.
