Fort Worth\u2019s police oversight monitor gave an update on her office during the July 6 Human Relations Commission meeting<\/a>.<\/p>\n Bonycle Sokunbi, the office\u2019s<\/a> director, presented slides about the office\u2019s mission to foster community trust through cooperation and law enforcement accountability. Her presentation included history and current policies on audits, mediation, use of force and other police internal affairs.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to give the clarity that we are a monitor’s office, meaning that we cannot investigate, nor can we impose discipline as it relates to the Fort Worth Police Department,<\/a>\u201d Sokunbi said.<\/p>\n The office originated from the Fort Worth Task Force on Race and Culture<\/a>, which the city council formed and appointed following the controversial arrest<\/a> of Jacqueline Craig. The task force recommended an independent<\/a> civilian oversight board; the police monitor is an internal city office that tracks and monitors complaints and internal investigations related to police misconduct.<\/p>\n Where complaints originate<\/p>\n Most complaints come from Fort Worth residents, and they can file them in two ways: contact the police monitor<\/a> directly, or contact Police Internal Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n Police monitor\u2019s budget<\/p>\n The budget is about $1 million annually as part of the city manager\u2019s office. Sokunbi reports to the city manager. The monitor also issues special reports and monthly transparency reports that provide statistical updates on complaints received, broken down by category, City Council district and police division. It provides community education and facilitates no-judgment mediation<\/a> in cases such as alleged rudeness or discourteousness, neglect of duty and unprofessional behavior by a police employee.<\/p>\n June Transparency Report<\/p>\n Year to date, through June, the police monitor reported having received 113 complaints.
