The Nigerian community brings with it diverse cultures, and with those cultures come the foods we grew up with. As a Nigerian experiencing a new environment, we often crave the flavors of home. However, if you want to explore a different cuisine, develop a new taste, or simply try something new, this list is a great place to start.

Credit: ChòpnBlọkChòpnBlọk

I was taken to this restaurant with the idea that it was vaguely local, mainly because of the name, but that wasn’t the case at all. I would still describe it as “African food for white people,” not as an insult, but because of the way the dishes are prepared, the ingredients used, the presentation, and the overall dining experience. The food isn’t served in the typical Nigerian style, which made it even more interesting. I was fortunate to experience African-inspired dishes prepared in an unconventional way. It’s an African restaurant that presents familiar flavors in a way that appeals to a wider audience.

The blend of flavors, ingredients, and African food concepts really blew me away, and the food certainly did not disappoint. The interior is traditional, cultural, and comfortable, making it a welcoming place to enjoy a meal.

ChòpnBlọk is located at 401 Franklin Street, and you can expect to spend around $20–30 for a quality meal, including appetizers. It’s a unique dining experience and is highly rated by customers.

Credit: Amala ZoneAmala Zone

Many of the restaurants on this list serve a variety of traditional Nigerian dishes, and Amala Zone is no exception. I was introduced to the restaurant by my parents, and it offers a great selection of Nigerian soups, meats, and classic rice dishes. One thing I truly enjoy about it is its strong local and cultural influence, with amala being its signature swallow dish.

Amala is a swallow made from yam flour and is paired with a variety of Nigerian soups. The yam flour is mixed into hot water until it forms a smooth, dough-like consistency. The dish is usually served with assorted meats or fish, making it both filling and satisfying.

Amala Zone is located at 14815 Westheimer Road, and you can expect to spend up to $30 for one of its signature meals. They cater and also make deliveries to other states last I heard.

If you’re looking for an authentic taste of traditional Nigerian cuisine, this is a great place to visit. This could be a good spot to try if you want to eat Amala for the first time.

Credit: Wazobia KitchenWazobia Kitchen

Wazobia Kitchen is a household name for many Nigerians in Houston. They provide affordable and delicious meals for everyday Nigerians, largely because they serve the dishes many of us grew up eating. However, that doesn’t make the food ordinary.

What drew me to Wazobia Kitchen the most was how simple the menu is and how efficient the service is. There’s also an ease in being able to choose what you want without feeling overwhelmed. It’s affordable, straightforward, and easy to navigate.

Wazobia Kitchen offers a variety of meals, including rice dishes like jollof rice and fried rice, swallow meals, yam dishes, and bean-based meals. Believe me, each of these meals has its own unique taste, and they’re all worth trying.

Wazobia Kitchen has locations on Westheimer Road and Beechnut Street. It is also connected to Wazobia Market, where you can shop for Nigerian groceries and products, but that’s a list for another day. Wazobia Kitchen also delivers through popular delivery outlets like Uber and Doordash.

Credit: Marie’s African FlavorsMarie’s African Flavors

I was introduced to this restaurant after a shoot, and I can honestly say it’s a great place to visit after a long day at work. The service is swift, and although the menu isn’t limited to Nigerian dishes, I highly recommend it. The last time I visited, I noticed Cameroon’s famous Ndolé soup on the menu, so it’s truly a restaurant that celebrates African cuisine.

Like the other restaurants on this list, Marie’s African Flavors offers a wide variety of meals, but what makes it stand out to me is its selection of soups. They serve regular stew, pepper soup, and other African soups from different countries. In Nigeria, a bowl of pepper soup after a long day’s work can be incredibly comforting, so having that option made this restaurant feel special to me.

The atmosphere is also my style: dark, colorful, and serene. There’s even live music, which adds to the experience. The combination of the food, service, and atmosphere makes it a relaxing place to enjoy a meal, and I think that’s its greatest strength.

I recommend this restaurant if you’ve had a long day at work and want a place to unwind, or if you’re interested in trying African dishes from beyond Nigeria.

Marie’s African Flavors is located at 12600 Bissonnet Street, and you can expect to spend $10–50 for a satisfying meal.

Credit: Famous Princess KitchenFamous Princess Kitchen

I don’t even know where to start with this restaurant. Whenever I have a special occasion, like my birthday, this is one of the places I always go. This Nigerian-run restaurant has something that is rare to find in many Nigerian restaurants I have been to, and that is Pounded Yam, my favorite swallow dish.

Over time, this dish has been substituted with Poundo Yam, which is a processed version of the more authentic Pounded Yam. Just like the name implies, it is simply yam that has been pounded.

Beyond that, from the taste of the dishes, soups, and meals alone, you can tell how authentic the ingredients are and how much skill goes into preparing them. The meals are fresh, well-seasoned, and the meat is tender enough for people who don’t have the strongest teeth. All the soups are served generously in a traditional calabash while they are still hot and boiling, showing just how fresh they are. It also allows you to take home any leftover soup, which is a nice bonus.

Famous Princess Kitchen also offers a variety of other meals, ranging from rice dishes to different swallow meals, but the pounded yam remains its signature dish, mainly because it is so rare to find the authentic version at many Nigerian restaurants.

Famous Princess Kitchen is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and prices range from $50–80 for a full meal. It is located at 17036 W Little York Road. Parking and wait times can sometimes be a challenge because of its popularity, but the wait is worth it. The restaurant does not open on Sundays and Mondays.

I recommend this restaurant to Nigerians who want a rich taste of home and to anyone interested in trying authentic Nigerian cuisine with generous portions.

Credit: ChòpnBlọkConclusion

These are just a few of the Nigerian restaurants I’ve had the chance to visit. There are still so many others that I haven’t been to or tried yet, and maybe I’ll get to tell you about them another time.

For now, these restaurants have truly enriched my experience as a Nigerian living in Houston. Whether you’re looking for authentic flavors that remind you of home or you’re simply interested in exploring Nigerian cuisine for the first time, I hope this list gives you a great place to start. Houston’s food scene is as diverse as its people, and these restaurants are just a small taste of what the city has to offer.

Like I stated in my previous write-up, Houston is incredibly diverse and home to one of the largest…

[7
136554,56,58,57,56988,14118,136555,136556
post-387443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-african-cuisine","tag-houston","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news","tag-houston-restaurant","tag-houston-restaurants","tag-nigerian-cuisine","tag-nigerian-food
["GET
