The University of Texas at Arlington<\/a> is taking a lead role in developing \u201ctrustworthy\u201d AI models for use in high-level scientific experiments as part of the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Genesis Mission.<\/p>\n The energy department announced the first round of funding for the AI initiative this week in Washington, D.C. Genesis Mission aims to build the world\u2019s most powerful integrated science discovery platform, according to a news release from UTA.<\/p>\n Habeeb Olufowobi, a faculty member in the university\u2019s department of computer science and engineering, is leading the AI project, according to the news release.<\/p>\n \u201cOur goal is to develop practical technologies that help scientists confidently use AI in some of the world\u2019s most advanced research facilities without compromising the integrity of experiments or the reliability of scientific results,\u201d Olufowobi said.<\/p>\n Two graduate students from UTA will work on the project, along with collaborators from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the University of Colorado\u2013Colorado Springs, Washington State University and Metro State University.<\/p>\n Olufowobi said the work will begin in September and run through May. He added that he wasn\u2019t surprised when he learned that UTA was among the universities chosen for the Genesis project.<\/p>\n Olufowobi also provided an example of how a trustworthy AI model is key in certain situations, such as when there is output to the electricity grid.<\/p>\n \u201cIf it\u2019s not correct, it could have a catastrophic effect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Jennifer Cowley, president of UTA, was also on hand for the DOE presentation.<\/p>\n \u201cThis award reflects UT Arlington\u2019s role in solving problems of national importance,\u201d Cowley said. \u201cIt will give our students hands-on experience at the forefront of AI and cybersecurity research.\u201d<\/p>\n Related Stories from Fort Worth Star-Telegram<\/p>\n
