MESQUITE, Texas — From Texans bracing for Bertha or the next natural disaster to those having to rebuild yet again in the Hill Country, or even people working their day-to-day jobs, we can all relate to some form of stress.

Out of nearly 200 cities across the U.S., a new national survey released this month shows 16 Texas cities made the list of most stressed cities in America, with three cities making the top 30.

This survey has been going on for several years. A WalletHub analyst said it has remained pretty consistent over the years with the number of Texas cities making an appearance.

Patrice Jones is learning how to navigate this new season in her life.

“My forgetfulness that’s stressful to me because I can’t always remember people and their names,” said Jones.

Last summer, when Spectrum News first met the North Texas-based real estate agent, she was dealing with clients wanting to rent instead of buy their homes.

Fast forward to this summer, her concerns have skyrocketed.

“We didn’t know what was going on with me. And a lot of things, the stress doubled on me because I didn’t know why I was sick, and then it was stressful. Emergency room visit: they sent me home. I guess they thought I was just stressed out,” said Jones.

Turns out it was a brain tumor.

After having that removed from her head this spring, she has been homebound, relearned basic skills, and hasn’t been able to work since March.

“You’re worried about your finances, worried about trying to get back to work,” said Jones.

The mixed bag of stress factors she’s dealing with currently is just some of what her fellow Texans across the state can relate to, especially in the southeast.

“Houston ranks as the most stressed city in all of Texas. And there’s a lot going on in Houston. Again, like Dallas, is a large city,” said Chip Lupo, writer and analyst at WalletHub, a Florida-based personal finance company.

This month, they ranked 180 major U.S. cities based on stressors like work, finances, family, health and safety based on recent government data.

“Texas is such a large state; I mean, there’s quite a gap between the most stressed and the least stressed. Dallas is among in that top 50, 31st, just one notch ahead of Brownsville, Brownsville at 30th,” said Lupo.

Dallas tied with Scottsdale, Arizona, for the second-highest average weekly work hours.

Out of the 16 Texas cities on that list, North Texas cities made up nearly half of that total with seven cities.

“It’s our hope that policymakers are looking at these studies and saying, OK, we have all kinds of stress issues going on, what can we do?” said Lupo.

For Jones, while she’s leaning on her faith during this season of stress, she remains hopeful that there’s a light at the end of this dark tunnel.
