Shortly thereafter, the crew transmitted a squawk 7700 code on their transponder\u2014the universal aviation signal used by pilots to declare a general emergency to air traffic control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Declaring a squawk 7700 grants the aircraft immediate priority handling from air traffic controllers, clearing airspace and routing the plane back to the nearest suitable airport for a prompt landing.
