A southeast Texas cow\/calf operator says the sterile fly dispersals have been integral in the containment of New World screwworm.\u00a0Stephen Diebel says the proactive approach has made a difference.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a manageable situation as we get to the fall and the winter months,\u201d he says. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
He tells Brownfield\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important for producers to continue to keep eyes on their cattle\u00a0and look for signs of\u00a0infestations.\u00a0\u201cBut also,\u00a0understanding\u00a0the vet client patient relationship,\u201d he says. \u00a0\u201cAnd understanding that your veterinarian certainly needs to be involved with your treatment and prevention protocols.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Friday, the USDA announced it would begin reopening the southern ports to live cattle imports from Mexico.\u00a0Diebel says the timing makes sense.\u00a0\u201cWe are getting into the cooler months,\u201d he says. \u00a0\u201cThey are going about it in a way that seems like\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very methodical.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
There have been 42 confirmed cases of New World screwworm in the United States, 41 in Texas and 1 in New Mexico.\u00a0\u00a0Eleven cases\u00a0remain\u00a0active.\u00a0<\/p>\n
