LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The USDA\u2019s Summer Food Service Program is now available at the YWCA of Lubbock, providing free meals to children and teens in the area.<\/p>\n
The program runs Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Children and teens 18 and under are eligible, as are enrolled students with disabilities up to age 21.<\/p>\n
Callie Bryant with the YWCA of Lubbock said the organization recognized a need in the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe saw a need within the Lubbock community and wanted to step up and say we want to fill that for our community,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cWe want to make sure that kids aren\u2019t going home hungry and we want to be a centralized spot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bryant said the meals are free and healthy, and that the program offers more than just food.<\/p>\n
\u201cJoy,\u201d Bryant said, describing what she sees most when children come in. \u201cThe kids come in, they\u2019re excited, especially when it\u2019s tamale day, that\u2019s one of their favorites. They get comradery, they get to have a hot meal and they get a little security in a time where it might be a little insecure for them and not having a daily routine or regimen of going to school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bryant said the summer program is part of a broader effort by the YWCA to support children through its various programs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re our future within Lubbock,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cThese kids are our next leaders, they\u2019re our next business owners, our next teachers, so really nourishing this generation so they\u2019re successful, fed, and not worrying about the little things of where\u2019s my next meal coming from, when they can think about bigger dreams and bigger ideas. That\u2019s our goal.\u201d<\/p>\n
