For athletes who play Texas high school football, it\u2019s not just a game.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a lifestyle.<\/p>\n
Representing your high school and community under the Friday night lights \u2014 it\u2019s a significant and time-consuming aspect of athletes\u2019 young lives and a fleeting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will fade away, unless you\u2019re lucky enough to play college football.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why athletic eligibility is invaluable.<\/p>\n
And when an athlete transfers from one school to another, there\u2019s a chance it can be taken away. UIL Texas high school sports don\u2019t have a transfer portal, but their system is no less chaotic.<\/a><\/p>\n Two of the state\u2019s best players recently tried and failed to change schools for their senior seasons, prompting one to head to college. While some fans and coaches want high school sports to have more leniency on transfers, others say it would destroy the fabric of community-based athletics.<\/p>\n The transfer landscape brings plenty of debates in the Fort Worth area and the entire state.<\/p>\n At times, everything seems a bit chaotic. There is also a fair amount of misinformation circulating on social media and plenty of unanswered questions about the process as a whole \u2014 and many don\u2019t have straightforward answers.<\/p>\n Throughout the summer, the Star-Telegram will examine several topics to contextualize the transfer frenzy, as it\u2019s never been more talked about in Texas high school sports circles.<\/p>\n Here are some of the topics we\u2019ll dive into in our series Transfer Turmoil:<\/p>\n Explaining the process: How does transferring work?<\/p>\n So, how does an athlete transfer the right way?<\/p>\n Well, you have to follow all UIL rules and requirements, which all seem straightforward, except when it comes to transferring for athletic purposes. Those rules can be harder to pin down, as it\u2019s a near-impossible challenge for the over 1,400 UIL schools to have consistent, statewide enforcement.<\/p>\n We\u2019ll explain the major transfer rules to know and highlight specific examples to provide additional context.<\/p>\n Analyzing top player movement<\/p>\n Changing schools is extremely common, with more than 17,000 athletes in Texas filling out a prior athletic participation form (PAPF) this past year, according to UIL executive director Jamie Harrison.<\/p>\n It\u2019s incredibly common for top players, as six Fort Worth-area athletes in 247Sports\u2019 top 50 class of 2027 statewide recruiting lists have transferred schools.<\/p>\n North Crowley\u2019s John Meredith III, arguably the most high-profile high school athlete in Texas, transferred from Euless Trinity and was ruled ineligible by a district executive committee. His appeal to the UIL\u2019s State Executive Committee<\/a> was denied, so he reclassified to the class of 2026<\/a> and will be a member of the Texas Longhorns\u2019 roster this fall.<\/p>\n So, why were Meredith and Denton Ryan quarterback and Georgia commit Colton Nussmeier<\/a> ruled ineligible while other athletes who have transferred get to play?<\/p>\n We\u2019ll cover this question, which addresses whether athletes transferred for athletic purposes, a largely subjective determination that hasn\u2019t been enforced consistently across the state.<\/p>\n Is there anything head coaches, the UIL or DECs can do?<\/p>\n The UIL tends to receive a lot of blame, but in reality, the organization has less to do with Texas\u2019 transfer landscape than people think.<\/p>\n The UIL handles appeals, but the primary decision whether to clear or rule a player ineligible falls with a district executive committee. Of course, athletes and DECs must adhere to the UIL\u2019s contest rules.<\/p>\n The main issue is that each DEC can operate differently, which a Star-Telegram head coach survey showcased.<\/p>\n Several football coaches have anonymously told the Star-Telegram that they have cleared athletes they suspected of transferring for athletic purposes because they didn\u2019t want to see a child punished.<\/p>\n The former head coaches of the athletes arguably play the most important role in the process, as they fill out part of the PAPF.<\/p>\n According to UIL rules, coaches are supposed to fill out PAPFs accurately and honestly, yet our survey shows that many take students\u2019 best interests into consideration, especially given the vast majority of athletes are eventually cleared.<\/p>\n It\u2019s hard to blame any singular DEC, as each district has vastly different situations and levels of talent. There is also bias at play, which affects decision-making, even unconsciously.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a challenging issue that will never have a clear-cut answer or solution.<\/p>\n In upcoming stories, the Star-Telegram will further dive into what Fort Worth-area coaches think of the transfer landscape, showcase how different schools handle the chaos and explain what the UIL can do to help protect community based athletics.<\/p>\n Should there be a one-time transfer rule?<\/p>\n Should Texas follow in the footsteps of states like Tennessee, New Mexico and Oklahoma with a one-time transfer rule? Texas House Bill 619 was introduced, which would\u2019ve allowed it, but it did not move forward.<\/p>\n When it comes to transfers, every rule change involves some sort of trade-off.<\/p>\n The Texas High School Coaches Association is against a one-time transfer rule, saying the movement of top players could create super teams and defeat the purpose of community oriented athletics \u2014 playing high school ball with the same kids you grew up with.<\/p>\n The parents of some athletes, however, are making moves regardless. Many of them meet the UIL\u2019s eligibility requirements to pursue additional playing time, a winning situation or more exposure for their son or daughter \u2014 though, obviously, they can\u2019t publically admit it.<\/p>\n Can you really blame them? It\u2019s difficult for DECs to police, and parents want the right situation for their kids.<\/p>\n Transfer Turmoil will address the pros and cons of a potential one-time transfer rule.<\/p>\n Could transferring affect the athlete?<\/p>\n High school athletes have four years to put themselves in the best possible position to be noticed by college recruiters, and playing time is hard to come by for most underclassmen.<\/p>\n Sitting out one season could be the difference between getting a Division I offer and going completely under the radar.<\/p>\n And that player being ruled ineligible is still just a high school student \u2014 one who was simply following the advice of parents or coaches.
