On the Horn of Africa, bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti and the Red Sea is the hidden gem Eritrea. During the weekend of July 31-Aug. 2, North Texans can learn more about this country during the annual Festival Eritrea.<\/p>\n
Eritrea is a melting pot of cultures, and it is home to nine ethnic groups including the Tigrinya, Tigre, Saho, Afar, Bilen, Hedareb, Kunama, Nara and Rashaida. The culture is a blend of African and Middle Eastern influences, with traces of Italian culture from when Italy ruled the country as a colony from the late 19th to the early 20th century.<\/p>\n
The first Festival Eritrea was in 1974, and since then it has been an event at which multiple generations can reconnect and for others to learn more about the culture. The last time this\u00a0event was held in North Texas was in\u00a02022.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The three-day celebration this year will take place at Texas Trust CU Theatre and will showcase the country’s food, music, dance, fashion and community.<\/p>\n
Organizers are preparing to welcome 15,000 to 20,000 attendees during the festival. Activities will include art exhibitions, storytelling, coffee ceremonies, the Miss Eritrea Pageant 2026, graduate recognition, visual art and history forums, and sports competitions in soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field, and martial arts.<\/p>\n
