CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Corpus Christi beach visitors could soon see a higher price for parking permits after City Council approved a proposed fee increase.<\/p>\n
During Tuesday\u2019s meeting, council members voted 5-4 in favor of raising the annual beach parking permit fee from $12 to $20. The proposal will now head to the Texas General Land Office, which will make the final decision on whether the increase can move forward.<\/p>\n
City leaders say the additional revenue is needed to keep up with the rising costs of maintaining local beaches. Expenses for services including lifeguards, trash collection, equipment, fuel and other beach operations have increased over the years.<\/p>\n
Jonathan Atwood with Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation said the current permit price has remained unchanged for more than two decades, making it difficult for the city to keep up with growing costs.<\/p>\n
Officials say the additional funding would help support the services visitors rely on while enjoying Corpus Christi\u2019s beaches.<\/p>\n
If approved by the Texas General Land Office, the new $20 beach parking permit fee is expected to take effect in January.<\/p>\n
