The older I get, the more I think about my time as a kid and growing up.<\/p>\n
For most of my childhood, I have some very good and fond memories. I\u2019m not sure I want to go back in time; however, I do enjoy reminiscing about the old days, and the adventures me and my brothers had together.<\/p>\n
We couldn\u2019t wait to get out of school for the summer. It meant weekends at the lake with our parents (and we didn\u2019t have air conditioning in our pop-up camper), endless days riding our bicycles (everywhere), and spending hour after hour at the public swimming pool, sunburned and red as lobsters.<\/p>\n
The only sunscreen was the white zinc oxide cream on our noses and then the hot ride home on our bikes, tired and sunburned. We were biscuit brown by the end of the summer. As long as we were home by the time the night lights came on, we were golden. Then it was time for school to start again.<\/p>\n
As a kid this was a bummer; however, as we got older and began to play school sports, the return to school was welcomed a little bit more. I played middle school, high school, and college football.<\/p>\n
I remember the two-a-day workouts like it was yesterday. I remember the smell of the cut grass, the smell of the sweaty pads, the sweat, and sometime tears from the rigor of the practice and the games.<\/p>\n
During my first two years at Sam Houston State, we had three-a-day practices. Some days the turf was so hot, it would burn the bottoms of your feet.<\/p>\n
Oh, the memories. I\u2019m sure some of you have the same type of memories.<\/p>\n
As the students prepare to return to school, let\u2019s take a few minutes and talk about some back-to-school safety tips.<\/p>\n
Plan ahead and develop a routine.
\nSet the routine early.
\nSlow down in school zones.
\nPrioritize sleep for the student, remember nutrition matters for learning, and limit screen time.
\nTurn off those electronics an hour before bedtime.
\nEncourage self-care and celebrate small wins.
\nPositive self-talk encourages your student to want to learn and go to school.<\/p>\n
By combining\u00a0organization, health routines, emotional support, and safety practices, families can create a positive and smooth transition back to school, helping children feel confident, prepared, and supported throughout the year.<\/p>\n
