LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) -A former Texas Tech football player is behind what will be the first Football Bowl Subdivision game ever played in London, England.<\/p>\n
Brian Dubiski played for the Texas Tech football team from 1988 to 1991. After his college career, he became a partner in a marketing agency specializing in sports, building relationships with teams in the United Kingdom over the years.<\/p>\n
Dubiski\u2019s experience with international college football dates to his playing days. As a Red Raider, he participated in the 1988 Coca-Cola Classic, a game between Texas Tech and Oklahoma State played in Tokyo, Japan.<\/p>\n
\u201cTalk about an amazing experience to be a 19-year-old kid, number one, getting to fly all the way out to Tokyo and experience that culturally and then play against the Heisman trophy winner and maybe one of the best running backs that\u2019s ever played football,\u201d Dubiski said.<\/p>\n
Those international connections ultimately led to the creation of the Union Jack Classic. Dubiski now serves as chairman and CEO of the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re very proud to be able to, in our mind, take a college football game to London for the rest of the world to really get to see and feel the difference in college football and NFL football and that pageantry that college football brings to the table,\u201d Dubiski said.<\/p>\n
Dubiski said working out the logistics took time, but the reception from Wembley Stadium was immediate.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember our initial conversation, the first words out of the GM at Wembley was \u2018I\u2019ve been waiting on this moment and I\u2019m surprised it took this long,\u2019\u201d Dubiski said.<\/p>\n
The inaugural Union Jack Classic is scheduled for Sept. 19 between Arizona State and Kansas at Wembley Stadium. Fox Sports\u2019 \u201cBig Noon Kickoff\u201d will also take part in the event.<\/p>\n
As for the possibility of Texas Tech one day playing in the Union Jack Classic, Dubiski had a message for Red Raider leadership.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully we can get our Red Raiders over there one day, so if Cody and Kirby are listening to this, let\u2019s get you over there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
