Officials said legitimate bond information and release procedures go through the courts and licensed bail bond companies, not unsolicited callers.

Scammers use real jail records

The scammers reportedly use public jail records to find people currently in custody or recently booked. They then search social media and other online sources for relatives and friends, allowing them to use accurate information during the call.

Callers may also spoof caller ID so the call appears to originate from a government office. Some use the name and title of a Dallas County Sheriff’s Office employee to appear legitimate, officials said.

“Their goal is to create a sense of urgency and pressure victims into sending money before verifying the facts,” the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff’s office says do not pay

The sheriff’s office said it will never call to demand payment for an inmate’s release, pressure someone to pay over the phone or request funds through gift cards, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or other difficult-to-trace methods.

Anyone who receives such a call should hang up, withhold personal or financial information and send no money. Recipients should independently verify any claim through an official county or court contact rather than return the suspicious call.

Dallas County’s official website lists 214-761-9025 as the Inmate General Info Line. The county’s online jail lookup lists the same number. Residents of unincorporated Dallas County may report the call to sheriff’s dispatch at 214-749-8641. Other residents should contact their local law enforcement agency.

Similar impersonation scams

A similar scheme prompted a Denton County Sheriff’s Office warning in February, as previously reported by The Dallas Express. In that case, callers posed as deputies and demanded Bitcoin over supposed missed federal jury duty.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office warned Wednesday that scammers are targeting relatives and friends of people held at…

[9
138039,102,581,20908,9212,104,103,8374,138037,138036,138038
post-392014","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-dallas","tag-caller-id-spoofing","tag-dallas","tag-dallas-county","tag-dallas-county-jail","tag-dallas-county-sheriffs-office","tag-dallas-headlines","tag-dallas-news","tag-fraud","tag-inmate-release-scam","tag-jail-bond-scam","tag-phone-scams
["GET
