EL PASO, Texas (Border Report<\/a>) \u2014 As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of its independence, the El Paso Museum of Art invites visitors to reflect on the nation\u2019s history, identity, and future from the perspective of artists whose work is rooted in the Borderland.<\/p>\n

The museum\u2019s newest exhibition, \u201cAmerica, The Beautiful,\u201d features 19 mixed-media works by Mexican American, Chicano, and contemporary artists whose paintings, drawings, sculptures, and mixed-media pieces explore identity, power, immigration, justice, and belonging.<\/p>\n

According to the museum, the exhibition centers the Borderland within the broader narrative of the American dream, presenting the region not as the nation\u2019s edge, but as an integral part of its history and identity.<\/p>\n

Among the featured artists are El Paso-rooted Gaspar Enriquez, Adriana Corral, and Luis A. Jim\u00e9nez Jr., whose works examine national identity while depicting the realities of binational communities.<\/p>\n

The exhibition also includes works by Mel Chin, Carlos Fresquez, Jesse Jaramillo, Kathy Vargas, Vincent Valdez and Rubio, whose works confront issues of power, inequality, and contemporary American life.<\/p>\n

One standout artwork\u2014notable for both its unusual size and its detailed pencil work\u2014is \u201cJanuary 6: Selfie.\u201d<\/p>\n

The San Antonio-born artist Rubio depicts, in great detail, his vision and portrayal of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. <\/p>\n

The work reflects his distinctive curvilinear line style and highlights the most chaotic moments during one of the most violent political episodes in modern U.S. history. <\/p>\n

Museum text explains that the piece references the role social media played during the attack, when many participants photographed, livestreamed, or recorded themselves inside the Capitol.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica, The Beautiful\u201d\u00a0showcases artists\u2019 perspectives on the legacy of 250 years in the United States and the wider Americas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe variety of topics and mediums reflects a significant range of lived experiences,\u201d the City of El Paso said.<\/p>\n

City officials noted that some pieces focus on recent American history, including partial presidential portraits and artistic interpretations of nationally recognized events that many visitors will remember from television news and social media.<\/p>\n

Rather than offering a single interpretation of history, the exhibition is intended to encourage dialogue and reflection.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe complexity on display in\u00a0\u2018America, The Beautiful\u2019\u00a0is meant to inspire conversation and contemplation, highlighting the many ways different people may experience the same history,\u201d the city said.<\/p>\n

Another striking piece by Kathy Vargas, part of her\u00a0\u201cMask Adults Wear\u201d\u00a0series, explores identity and the personas people present to society through hand-colored photographic prints. In a statement, the City of El Paso said that similar exhibitions are being presented at museums across the country during the nation\u2019s semi-quincentennial.<\/p>\n

Museum officials emphasized that the exhibition is presented alongside works spanning centuries of art history, including the museum\u2019s American Collection.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe El Paso Museum of Art is proud to continue showcasing these perspectives and bringing sometimes challenging topics to our visitors,\u201d the city said.<\/p>\n

Museum Director Edward Hayes Jr. described the collection as portraying the United States as \u201ca beautiful yet complex tapestry\u201d \u2014 one that serves as \u201can embattled landscape, a canvas for dreams, and a stage for the ongoing pursuit of representation, justice and belonging.\u201d<\/p>\n

The exhibition was organized by the El Paso Museum of Art with Georgina and Joe Diaz and EPMA Education and Curatorial Associate Eun-Ji Jun.<\/p>\n

Support was provided by the Texas Commission on the Arts, the Mellon Foundation, the El Paso Museum of Art Foundation and the City of El Paso\u2019s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department.<\/p>\n
