California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) will hold a rally in Texas on Saturday opposing the state\u2019s redistricting efforts alongside local Democratic lawmakers, days after Golden State voters backed a measure<\/a> to redraw their own congressional districts.<\/p>\n

Texas was the first of several red states that followed<\/a> President Trump\u2019s directive to change their congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. Though some blue states considered redrawing their maps through the legislatures, Newsom elected to have voters choose if California should proceed with his plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalifornia stepped up. Now, we are taking this fight across the country \u2014 helping Democrats in other states push back against Trump\u2019s election rigging,\u201d Newsom said in a statement to Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Hill has reached out to Newsom\u2019s office for a comment.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, California voters approved Proposition 50<\/a>, allowing lawmakers to rework the Golden State\u2019s maps. This allows Democrats in the state to potentially gain five House seats in 2026. California represents the first state where Democrats have been able to successfully redistrict midcycle in response to the GOP\u2019s moves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With Proposition 50\u2019s success, it could raise Newsom\u2019s national profile as he continues his tit-for-tat with Trump and considers a run for president in 2028.<\/p>\n

The rally is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday, though the location has not yet been released, The Houston Chronicle<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n

Texas lawmakers approved of Gov. Greg Abbott\u2019s (R) redistricting plan in August. Like California, the new district lines are likely to add\u00a0up to five additional House seats<\/a>\u00a0for Republicans in next year\u2019s midterms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe One Big Beautiful Map has passed the Senate.\u00a0Despite Democrats\u2019 petty stunts, we delivered on our promise,\u201d Abbott wrote on the social platform X<\/a> at the time. \u201cThis map reflects Texans\u2019 actual voting preferences, and I look forward to signing it into law.\u201d<\/p>\n
