I mean, it\u2019s something that we really want to work on both offensively and defensively,\u201d Schottenheimer said of the short pass. \u201cSome of the recognition and stuff. I thought that was great. I thought the communication in the run game was awesome from the offensive line. The defense has given us some really good looks. I thought that was great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I noticed [Lawrence] more [Wednesday] in setting the edge in the run game using his length than I did as a pass rusher. Obviously there\u2019s a halo around the quarterback so they can\u2019t get close anyway, but I did think he did a hell of a job of setting edges, using his length and kind of creating that knock back that limits running lanes for the offense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the second day of practice Thursday, the Cowboys changed the rotation for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/article\/joe-milton-sam-howell-cowboys-backup-qb-roster-22299387.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second-team reps at quarterback<\/a>. On Wednesday it was Joe Milton,\u00a0 and on Thursday, Sam Howell got the call.<\/p>\n<p>Unofficially, Howell completed five of nine passes. Milton completed three of seven passes, after going 7-for-7 the day before.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best catches of the day was from veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who made a leaping grab of a Milton throw.<\/p>\n<p>Schottenheimer said Day 1 of training camp could have gotten a little better overall due to the pre-snap penalties and mental mistakes. Day 2, the referees seemed to ignore some apparent holding calls along the offensive line but did call a defensive pass interference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that the overall effort was a little bit inconsistent,\u201d\u00a0Schottenheimer said of Day 1. \u201cThey\u2019re getting their legs up underneath him. I get that. I showed some clips [Thursday] of the standard and then showed some clips of what\u2019s not the standard.
